Just read this on Reuters too. I was ready to post it here.

Crazy. Well, git protocol is open and has many clients, but Github website in itself will become a clusterfuck as with everything microsoft puts it's hands on. Maybe there will be a exodus to Bitbucket?
Damn, I wish someone make a decentralized alternative to these versioning systems, where each computer is a node.

For the time being, Gitlab hosting is the superior solution

I can't tell due to the language barrier. Is this an ironic jest?

Is it not enough for people to simply buy a vps and host his own git?
If he wants other people to have access to it, a simple webpage and he's done.
I mean, github was proprietary, and only gods know what they are doing with such important informations (definitively gonna end up in an AI for whatever purpose). When I think about github, and I don't know at what extend new code is going through them, I always think about this shitty tv serie Person of interest, when they try to find the language (in what the coder made the "good" ai into) by scanning the internet for this code.

Precision: when I say available to people, I mean the public for download. If there is just a few contributors, a simple vps is enough. For public, maybe bigger, but a webpage is all what he needs.

For all the people who left GitHub and migrated to GitLab on a rush because you don't like Microsoft, welcome to Microsoft Azure.

I think the only thing which made git popular was Github. Fossil SCM and Bazaar were and still are better versioning systems, but nobody provided free and advertless hosting for them.

reminder, if you don't like gitlab.com, there's always gitgud.io.
They've never lost any user data and run on faster hardware.

GitLab as a web-based Git-repository manager with wiki and issue-tracking features is not GitLab the website that's on Microshit servers. GitGud.io runs on GitLab software, gitlab.gnome.org is not GitLab.com, etc., so basically, you're still a fucking moron.

Damn, why so hostile?
I obviously referred to GitLab as a service (and GitHub as a service, not the GitHub desktop client used in offline mode) and that 250000 project whom just fled over according to https://twitter.com/gitlabstatus/status/1003887898142367744

A reminder that Apache Allura (which is used by SourceForge) still exists: https://allura.apache.org/
And it also includes a forum. What I always hated about GitHub and GitLab that some projects have hundreds of open "issues" because people use the Issue system as a forum for every type of discussions.

+bonus 1: usable without Javascript
+bonus 2: non-flat theme
