I agree. We should use an image of someone promoting diversity and social justice in tech. There's nothing fresher than diversity.

I would suggest Coraline Ada Ehmke.

Unfortunately, SJWs destroying tech isn't something you can just ignore and hope it goes away. You might want to have nothing to do with them, but they want to have something to do with you, and the tech you love, whether you like it or not.

First they came for Github, and I did not speak out—
Because I did not use Github.

Then they came for Intel, and I did not speak out—
Because I used AMD.

Then they came for 4chan, and I did not speak out—
Because there were other chans to visit.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Richard Stallman is a great programmer. He wrote GCC, and worked on at least three operating systems (ITS, Symbolics Lisp Machines, and GNU). In the case of the Lisp Machine OS, he maintained his own libre fork of the operating system, and independently wrote his own patches for every single feature and bug fix *the entire company* released.

He didn't "side with the SJW on Gamergate". He found an article about Gamergate, said that death threats are bad, gave a list of corruption in other areas of journalism, and complained about software freedom.

>Would linking to boards on other sites be a good idea?

I'd say yes IFF 1) you exclude 8chan (broken) and 4chan (cucked) AND 2) you get a reciprocal link from them. This place has few enough users as it is. If you're going to potentially send traffic to other boards, then we should position ourselves to receive lol, position ourselves to receive what r u a fag? lol traffic in return.

Anonymous 04/19/2016 (Tue) 18:27:30 [Preview] No. 2788 del
>>2781
I don't think that would leave any boards. Some of the boards worth linking to don't even have a sticky to send traffic back.

Do you have a problem with linking to boards that aren't about technology in general, like https://8ch.net/lv/ (besides that it's on 8chan)?

>Do you have a problem with linking to boards that aren't about technology in general,

I don't, as long as it's the sort of thing that would appeal to the typical denizen of this board.

I guess I was being too restrictive in my earlier statement about requiring a reciprocal link. It just seems like a shame to not have an avenue for generating traffic when this place is so dead. You should do what you think is best. You can always make adjustments later.

Nah, it's not a bad idea, especially if you're aiming at a similar-sized audience elsewhere.

And if you're aiming bigger? It creates an incentive for them to interact with us ankle-biters, rather than it seeming like we're just shilling and leeching their traffic.

We should settle on rules now that there's more interest in Endchan.

In particular:
- Should tech support and other personal support threads be allowed? If not, should they go in a sticky? How strict should it be?
- Should desktop threads and other ricing threads be allowed?
- Should unspoilered NSFW be allowed?

The stickies were great, keep them.

I think they should be. Productivity and ergonomics are a huge part of technology and discussion the merits between desktop environments and shit is important. The only problem has been the attention faggots trying to get people to "like" their gaming machine. If you could have the first bit but not the second there would be no question in my mind but I still lean toward allowing them.

No.

Not allowing desktop and other ricing threads would be like 8/tech/'s policy. Discussing desktop environments and ergonomics would be fine, but screenfetch and homescreen threads wouldn't.

I'm not a fan of them, but I think banning them is too arbitrary because you don't really get more than two at a time. I lean towards allowing them too but I'm ok with disallowing them if that's what people want.

Yes. Allow these, it makes no sense to spread a community thin while it is trying to grow. If at some point the community grows big enough, split them, but not during it's infancy. During infancy you need more posts to keep people active.

There's a 2:1 proportion of people in the poll who want unspoilered NSFW versus people who want spoilered NSFW.

I'm still leaning towards spoilered, because having them unspoilered when you're in public and want them spoilered is much more of a problem than having them spoilered when you want them unspoilered. Is that reasonable?

I'm generally against unspoilered NSFW because there's no reason for it to be on this board but I don't really care that much about it.
Ricing and support threads should be kept off the board, though. I really enjoy the board as it is now because it's free of all those cancerous generals, support and ricing threads. Instead, people come here to discuss technology topics that matter, like security and anonymity. I believe it should stay that way.

Cloudflare is a good example of how shitty the internet industry is becoming. Industrialisation of web services and web security is becoming more comprehensive. Further perpetuating the reliance on these web monsters. More and more content can be filtered based on a combination of user and supplier. We can plainly see it with major search providers now.

Im not trying to be a doomsayer but our current political and economical structure encourages these trends..

Welp. Endchan /tech/ is over. MikeeUSA is shitting all over the front page with impunity, there's an irrelevant Trump thread that doesn't belong on /tech/, and I just saw "hurr systemd" thread #932,562,413. This one, I'm pretty sure, is just a copy of one from Lainchan. The phrasing of the questions is the same.

I've deleted the Trump thread (for not being technology) and the systemd thread (for being a duplicate).

I don't have a real solution for MikeeUSA in the GRSecurity thread. He's using Tor, so I can't ban him, and I know from experience that deleting his posts just makes him post more. Infinity has a few tools that helped deal with it, but Lynxchan doesn't have them (and most of the moderation tools that it does have are painful).

I use a simple rule of thumb for deciding whether a thread is relevant to /tech/.

If the topic of a thread is likely to lead to discussion of technology, it's relevant.

Your thread failed that. It led to discussion about Trump, and a little discussion about the TPP. Any discussion about technology was coincidential. I remember that someone mentioned technology in your 8chan thread, but that was in response to a metapost about /v/.

Are you the same person who complained about ""censorship"" before? The same person, in fact, who asked for an *anti-harassment system* on 16chan?

I use to get that issue back in the day on just normal Firefox. What it was was that I didn't have the proper codecs or whatever, it might be your OS but like the other anons pointed out, it could be your security settings not allowing it. I think back then, I had to install ffmpeg but it might not be the same issue you have.

It does not comply with the idea behind allowing tor. One spammer ruins it for everyone and even makes a name for himself because of being able to post files anyways, Its kind of an outrage because if you have Firefox forks or whatever properly configured. The block bypass will not work with a properly configured browser. you get a login page with the captcha that is not for the block bypass. I think it is a redirection thing. Either way it is really annoying.

I suggested the qurentine method. Allowing abuse of one spammer to flaunt bypassiong this petty stipulation is an abuse in and of itself. I mean on the goon swamp freech you can post images with tor. Pretty sure they have had a provlem with abuse buit the niche site is used to it. By giving into the spamming subverters demands (disable tor posting). Is an abuse of the user-base.

Anonymous 12/18/2016 (Sun) 21:44:03 [Preview] No. 7679 del

You can also post files using TOR here. The setting that controls that was changed from 1.6 to 1.7 and for a while it wasn't allowed.

And can you show me a single site that uses quarantine for something like this? Having people to clear every single post from tor is extremely impractical, might as well block tor posters entirely.

What if the user could enable all images to be spoilered if they are at work/class/outdoors or keep them unspoiled for at home. Additionally, when posting there could be an option to let spoiler anons know if the image is graphic. This could change the color of the spoiler or something to that effect.

Just a thought to give more options for the sake of compromise. Since an image can be questionable without being graphic.

I was looking at Ubuntu Budgie but there was not UI scaling option. Unity seems to have the best scaling and the GUI is all over the place. Whew, nice recovery! I'm familiar with the traditional use of sage stemming from Japanese imageboard culture. I'm also familiar with the concept of trying to rationalize an embarrassing gaffe by lying about your motivation or attributing misunderstanding to the other party.

What a low-stakes thing to come back and lie about several days later, though. You are truly a sad specimen.

This thread is quite obscure and I am uncertain if this post will be viewed by another human.

I am tired of this endless bullshit! I am tired of politics constantly leaking into this board, I am tired of every thread being related to damn security in one way or another, I am tired of idiots leaking into this medium and causing it to cease being entertaining and insightful for the genuinely savvy users, and I am tired of constantly running from corporations and agencies that want to oppress me and take my data, fuck this.

/tech/ has ceased being a medium for discussing genuine software and hardware and has basically become a medium for hiding from corporations and agencies and constantly being paranoid that every fucking electronic device around you wants you dead, it gets old after a while, and you end up using hardware and software which is absolutely useless for daily activities. BUT HEY! This software/hardware protects your freedom, so you should install it!

I want to discuss motherboards, I want to discuss soldering and other techniques for building simple electronics, I want to discuss interesting software applications for performing calculations or visualizing data plugged into it, I want to discuss signal interception using old television satellite dishes, I want to discuss physics and mathematics that pertains to technology, I want to discuss internal compression engines and transmissions (Because this type of shit actually pertains to /tech/).

But I know this is all a dream, imageboards are filled with faggots and individuals who are interested in these types of topics are highly rare, and on rare imageboards such as this, the only people you will find are those who are here because they care only about their privacy and that is all.

There should definitely be more threads about hardware and other branches of engineering. Ironically, even though I am EE student no one in my class is particularly interested in field they study. Drinking and partying comes before everything, it's very tiresome to be surrounded by such people and I have no one to talk with, so I often loose will to do anything. I am also not very fond of forums, since attaching name to your every post is uncomfortable in some situations and I also find forum format more confusing than image board format of discussion. So by all means start a engineering/hacking/lab/whatever thread so that we may discuss about soldering, electronics, mechanics, physics and other things that are different from usual privacy and free software talk.

Here's my horribly edited image in 500x200 https://endchan.xyz/tech/banners/1512721036457

Here's the deal, if you can make 15 10 good banners in the same size while optimizing at least 5 existing banners, I'll consider it. For uniformity's sake, I suggest you all to make it have the omega logo and something tech related. How big do you want it to be? I genuinely don't care for phoneposters though, some banners look great when they're not puny. If you don't like 500x200, suggest a image resolution that isn't puny and isn't wider than 4:1.

That's not what I meant for 'custom flags of real countries', I meant as a flag that anyone can choose by themselves to LARP as. However, fantasy countries and meme flags like say GNU Userland, ring 0, A fucking wagon wheel(to represent pajeets that have a hard on for shilling android and linux consumerism shit), etc., that deals with some level of /tech/ and even old /g/ memes could be implemented if you guys are creative enough to make flags for arbitrary concepts like that.

What are you talking about, shit that happened during the first six months of this /tech/ that had dealt with spam bots, MikeeUSA along another wapanese tripfagging pedo sympathizer and the general hoard of people from 8chan's /tech/ that tested the waters here in this /tech/? Well the old threads isn't here anymore, and I'm not ring, neither was I a volunteer on /tech/ before. The only arguing anyone's doing here is you. If you guys don't want it, fine by me. If you guys do want it, also fine by me. either way, no amount of metadata can change what I and the four board volunteers can see on our end. "We" haven't discussed this in this thread in detail at all. It's a partial admission on your end that you are at the very least to not be mature enough to deal with country flags and IDs. If everyone else feels the same, I'm not going to push anything what you guys don't want, should you guys want to have a sense of representative democracy here. You're just one person. I need more input from other users to make a decision even though I agree with you in more ways than you can comprehend. Do you want me to disregard true criticism of you and your peers and run this ship like a benevolent dictator like Linus T.? I'll do it if you guys democratically allow me to do so. Discuss among yourselves again or see me do nothing, but overall, there won't be any drastic changes.

That's an over reaction, your writing style provides more identifiable meta data than a country flag. Having said that if your privacy is that important to you that you need to cover the tracks of your shitposts, you should be using tor rendering your opinion on flags moot. Flags could be fun, post count is so low some experimentation is worth exploring.

I've already seen that thread and the context is different. That thread talked about flags based on useragents and along with lots of other nonsense suggestions ended up in /operate/ because some people had ulterior motives to unmod ring and take over /tech/ through a thin veneer of criticism to disguise its meta-whining. The country flags that I've suggested are the ones that you choose for yourself like this MSDOS flag that I'm using for this post, except dealing with some technology related ones like India, China, (((Israel))), Taiwan, Japan, Germany, etc., places that are known for something in technology and manufacturing related context. That is not the same as enabling flags based on IPs. If you're saying that you want to get rid of all of these custom flags, that's an obvious no though if there's an unanimous support from real users that want to get rid of all of the custom flags, I'll consider it. If you want a vote on it, we can. Concerning enabling the country flags by IP, two people here seem to be for it or indifferent about it, while two other people here are against it which those two are me and you. If I remove myself from the equation, there's just two against one. If my vote counts for 9001 votes, I first need some reassurance from three or more individuals to assume to become the law itself, should you guys even want a dictatorship. Until this is decided, nothing would happen concerning this issue which means you and I get our way anyways. However, the so called consensus is not no flags in that thread as well as this thread. Either work with this system or peacefully leave. It's more dishonest to be all bark but no bite than to be all bite but no bark.

There's seven banners that's over 500 KB. Get better internet bandwidth and hardware.

Here's my proposal: make fourteen 500x200 old /g/ or /tech/ related banners under 500 KB that has an omega logo as well as /tech/ somewhere on the banner if it isn't clear enough that it's a /tech/ related banner. Do this and if there's more than two poorfag pajeets on their android phone using 2G networks, I'll get rid of all of the banners over 500 KB. Until then, tough luck phonefags, just filter the randomBanner.js script if you can.

Yeah about that, if you guys want lower quality versions of the currently existing banners beyond 500 KB, then go ahead, I'll replace those instead IF that's what YOU guys want though it's really just one humble guy (excluding me and my one banner) making these banners. I really don't think that there's more than two minimalists lurking in our /tech/ at any moment so besides pleasing the masses, you don't "have" to at all. Take it as an self imposed challenge for fun. Do try to make it web optimized without making it look too crusty like a .gif image from the 90's.

You don't have to, but I don't think Stallman should be a representative symbol of every imageboard, even if that's a post-irony thing.

We could add something neutral, so that gnufags and bsdfags don't have a war. Also, let's not forget that technology is a bigger subject than just computers and software. Something simple as the pic related would be better in my opinion.

BTWglitch art's kinda cliche, darklikemysoul CSS themes are for those that don't use a desktop computer in a lit room, and I'm repulsed by bladerunner fans in general despite not watching the movies, the fanbase keeps me from even considering to watch ituntil we can decide on a picture for the next meta/sticky thread, I won't lock and unpin this one. Yes, so let's get a cliche (Stallman) and put some cliche effect (glitch), it should work fine, right?

As I have already said, we are not /g/. I suggested some "cyberpunkish" images just to fill the gap, since I think it's already better than following the bandwagon on Stallmanism religion. We don't need it here. If you think Stallman is somewhat important, then post it on a thread and you could discuss, but don't use it as the "face" of the board.

I could do some OC myself, I just need some reference image.

>darklikemysoul CSS themes are for those that don't use a desktop computer in a lit room
wow, edgy.

Inline:

<style type="text/css"> body{margin:40pxauto; max-width:650px; line-height:1.6; padding:100px; font-size:16px; color:#e3e3e3; background-color:#262626;}</style>

>I'm repulsed by bladerunner fans in general
It's a classic. At least watch it, it's good. Not everything mainstream is bad, although most of it really is. The new 2049 is bad, btw, I'd suggest the 1982 movie.
Or you could watch GITS 2 (Innocence), it's much better in my opinion. We have a /tech/ movie recommendation thread: >>11118

Your suggestion is rejected by me for now until there's at least two other people besides you that is for it with a better elaboration on what constitute as this /tech/'s imagery, but this isn't lainchan or >>>/cyber/ Here's my "suggestion": slap a omega symbol somewhere that's integral to the image so that it can't merely be removed like a simple watermark.
>don't use it as the "face" of the board.
I'm running a quasi dictatorship and since there's barely anyone that posts here besides you and some others and I know that there's at least three other people that browse this /tech/, my vote counts for two of any one of you guys on any matter. If you want me to cast my vote, you would have to abide to my "suggestion" and I'll do it. If you guys want to make a collaboration image that fits a 1000x1000 space, I'll allow that too, but hurry up, I want to make a new sticky thread. I reward effort more than I reward the people for being on the same page as each other. You guys got 3 more days left to make the image you guys like and decide among yourselves.
>color:#e3e3e3; background-color:#262626;
Not dark enough for me lmao. Your code is shit, tried to modify some shit but to no avail. You're better off asking the guy that made the CSS for /cyber/ help you or use the CSS in >>>/cyber/102 as a template. I would say this though, the first image of the new thread would show up in the catalog but not any other images after it. If there's a bunch of autists that wants other images in that thread, I'll allow that too, but if there's 4 or more people that wants a Stallman among the five possible slots, it would have to exceed 3 votes (my vote count for two for now). Giving the benefit of a doubt, same principle goes to any human face and tech mascots, 4 votes necessary to overrule a previous agreement with a new one.

Considering how nobody but one person had donated to odilitime, I really do think Endchan is at negative profits for next month and if nobody wants to pay for it, well I'd at least want to make a new and improved thread and less than two days left to fuck around in a good imageboard.

So are you okay with having a stallman image as the other images uploaded after yours? If so, I'll retract my vote and would allow a stallman image after the first non stallman image. If not, no stallman image.

No. All that matters to me on that discussiong is that the image, when entering catalog, will be something else other than stallman. I'm not "fighting" for some ideology, I just want to this board not to be 'represented' by the GNU leader (or any other "leader" at all, including Linus, Raadt or any other like that).

Being anti ideology is in and of itself an ideological revolution against itself, a self defeating cause no different than the fool that thinks gods literally reside in statues or how daemons are literally demons in the terminal. Only a fool judges a board by the sticky image or by its post per hour. Content over image. Any image can be replaced or just straight up deleted but the idea can't be eradicated even if it's censored no matter how right or wrong it may be, it comes up in a different image with a different name. Seeking to replace an image with "cyberpunk" shit would give an impression (to fools) that this is a /cyber/ clone which isn't really true neutral even if it's lawfully neutral to some technical autistic degree. However, since there's not much people to go against my vote and yours, I'll allow it. A pink elephant is still an elephant.

Regarding RMS as our board mascot, one has to start somewhere. He's strongly associated with /g/ across image-boards, so, yeah.

We're not beholden to /g/ though. I think we could do with a change.

If we're going to be different, we may as well put hammer down all the way through the floor. My suggestion? Hans Reiser. Say what you will, he's about as perfect a chan mascot as anyone could ever wish for. Leaning on this theme we should also create and sticky a chroot jail howto and suggestions thread.
