I just restarted watching anime out of boredom, recently started to watch serial experiments lain and shoukoku no altair which takes place in different version of ottoman empire.

Do any bernds watch anime here?

We don't post about anime much here since I bully animeposters. It's just friendly banter but coz I might seem so serious all the time for now everyone took it more seriously than it is and went elsewhere. I'm not sure other Bernds are into animay, maybe some American.
I saw some, what usually considered not bad like Akira and Ghost in the Shell. The latter (1 and 2, the three is bad, the show is worse) was good, the former I found meh-ish. It's really not the genre for me frankly.

It's a medium, not a genre.

I haven't watched much animu recently but I like to keep up with current manga. If you're looking for suggestions I'd recommend watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes because it's kc tier as fuck and even Bernds who aren't into animu much could probably enjoy it.

it's on my list since we started /kc/ but I haven't watched it yet

I watched Jojo and talked about it briefly in films thread but eh I got bored in the middle of 3rd season. Well not actually bored, it's just hard for me to find energy to watch entire series in general unless it's short and I much prefer watching full-lenght movies.

For me all animay is the same so it's a genre.

Well then you have something to discuss.

LoGH is pretty long (around 110 episodes plus a prequel film iirc) but it has a lot of substance compared to a shounen series like Jojo so you might not get bored as easily. The novels that the animu is adapted from are also mostly translated into English now if you prefer reading, but from what I heard the translation isn't that great.

will check.

I only watch pretty casual ones really, I never delved into full anime-manga subculture.

You probably think like that because you haven't explored it too much. Similarly to how someone who had only watched popular films would likely think all films are Hollywood blockbuster action films. But i guess they still all have some similarities in basic things due to always being from Japan, like cultural references, similar style of humour etc.

Not much of a weeb, but I watch it at the rate of one short series or less per year. Last one was Black Lagoon for the action and guns.
I'm generally reluctant to watch anything that has a lot of episodes, be it animated or a live-action series. I haven't watched any of the latter at all for years but that has more reasons, I can't stand normies talking about GoT or whatever. I don't feel the time is well-spent though my other hobbies are hardly better in this regard and I can't concentrate properly when it's not fun.
I intend to watch LoGH at some point, it ticks all of my boxes. The only thing holding me back is the large episode count.

You're dismissing an entire medium of work.
>Well then you have something to discuss.
I think LoGH is overrated. Also, I'm watching an anime this season called Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru. It's about a running team that's aiming to compete at the Hakone Ekiden Marathon, one of the most prominent university races in Japan. It's a classic sports anime but I bring it up because of how great of a job Production I.G is doing on it and because it's a seriously good watch for anime enthusiasts and the uninitiated alike. That said, 432 Bernd is right when he states that:
>they still all have some similarities in basic things due to always being from Japan, like cultural references, similar style of humour etc.
Yes, there are plenty of typically 'anime' references and humor in Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru; but they're not obtrusive. It's a good, recent, anime that I can recommend to you. But if you've not seen the undisputed masterpieces then do yourself a favor and give something like Porco Rosso a go.

Denying it's genreness is the true dismissal.
Anime is a genre in the medium of animation, not a genre in the medium of story writing like all westerners seem to think, since they dismiss the entire animation art form in favor of something so pedestrian as "plot".

You put that better why it's a genre. I didn't spend time to think a bit on this.

>Anime is a genre in the medium of animation
The word "anime" is simply just the word for animation in Japanese, so I wouldn't agree with that personally. Although most anime shares a similar style (so you are probably right in a general sense) there are some artists doing completely different things, look at Fukumoto's works for one example. The only prerequisite for being called anime is that it comes from Japan.
