VIDEOGAMES THREAD Bernd 06/09/2018 (Sat) 16:17:24 [Preview] No. 17090
Let's have le grand Official videogames thread.

It's thread, to discuss games.

After i plugged it into pc and made 3 clicks in special software i downloaded 500+ games into it, started with NES games, like battletoads2 double dragon, ending with SW: battlefront for PSP and several jrpg for PS1.

It's weight less than 1kg with controllers, so i could bring it to my friend's house to booze up and play some games.

For playing PS1/PSP/N64 games i plugged a wii controller... And it's works.

And for firstworlders: It had no onliune features, so it won't sell you to fbi, because you pirated some games.

Bernd 06/09/2018 (Sat) 16:30:33 [Preview] No.17092 del
no online features is now feature in these heady times

Bernd 06/09/2018 (Sat) 17:44:17 [Preview] No.17095 del

Bretty good feature.

Why not just use emulators?

Bernd 06/09/2018 (Sat) 18:08:25 [Preview] No.17101 del
a) I won't transport PC with emulators and 2 xbox 360 joysticks just to booze with friend, while playing battletoads.
b) inputlag
c) It cost less than xbox 360 controller
d) Playing vidya, while sitting on sofa in front of tv is much more comfortable than doing this sitting in front of pc

Bernd 06/09/2018 (Sat) 18:28:49 [Preview] No.17102 del
a) SFF computers can solve this if you have one
b) Unless you have a CRT the TV you plug it into is going to add 10 times the input lag the emulator does
c) Two Buffalo Classic controllers are like 25 burgerbux shipped and you can use them with things that aren't an SNES Classic
d) Extension cables

Still, whatever works4u budy

Bernd 06/09/2018 (Sat) 19:42:12 [Preview] No.17103 del

The whole Snes mini with 2 controllers cost here 40 burgerbux

Do you own an original licensed dendy or chineese pirated version?

Bernd 06/10/2018 (Sun) 07:14:49 [Preview] No.17121 del
I own no consoles and rarely played any games on those, Mario (dunno which one) at a friend and San Andreas at another. I only know Fighting Frogs - and other console games - thanks to AVGN.
I played HOMM III tho, quite a lot as it's really good, of course my fav faction is the Necropolis. While I didn't play as much with the much criticized IV I lieked that one too.

Nowadays I rarely play this year earlier went like two months without any. In the past weeks I gave a run to NFS Underground 2 which is installed for a while now, run a couple races daily, and still do, that's like 20 minutes...
I always think of reinstalling Mount & Blade: Warband, with some mod, maybe 1252AD or whatever it's called.

Bernd 06/10/2018 (Sun) 15:19:03 [Preview] No.17125 del
Btw Need for Speed. I believe the best soundtrack title of that series goes to NFS 3: Hot Pursuit at least in the rock-metal category. I think I already did this before but I'll share it again anyway.
I found it in one big file so I hacked it into pieces by race tracks. Now they all consist of shorter samples, in the game different samples should play on different parts of the race track, all has a lighter and a heavier variant, also one for the police chases. They all end abruptly as they should go on loop then fade out when a race ends.

I have original Dendy and chinese clone with literally same capabilities, but it is black and has different shape. That is fun because Dendy already is chinese clone, and having clone of clone is very postmodern.

I tried Open Panzer few times. Just an PG2 clone. It is good for those who like that game, although it isn't proper wargame.

There is also open source reimplementation of PG1: http://lgames.sourceforge.net/LGeneral/

Also some time ago GOG.com gave free Xenonauts for everyone, and I've spent yesterday with occasional playing. That is how your life goes to trash.

Game is ok though, it is very clone of original X-COM without really bad sides.

Well it isn't a TOAW but it is a proper wargame. It's made of war and game. And fun.
Oh yeah I forgot about LGeneral, and it's native on GNU+Linux too.

I think X-Com also has an opensource version.

Which one? Also how it goes? Opinion on it?

Bernd 06/11/2018 (Mon) 16:39:23 [Preview] No.17150 del
I mean, it is pretty simple and unrealistic compared to many wargames. Nothing bad though.

Yes, it is OpenXcom, very playable. There were also ufo2000 and multiple xcom-inspired games like UFO:AI.

Recently found a site with GoG games linked. I dunno how safe this site is. GoG has the good practice to repackage old titles so they are compatible with later Windows'. Which makes them more compatible with Wine. Usually.

For DOS games it mostly doesn't matter because it is all about dosbox. Early windows games are worse, yes, and gog sometimes do good things.

This is so incredibly bold piracy, so I couldn't even find a word to comment.

Played them all, tho somewhat half-assed. I couldn't into Pacific General really, it felt weird, maybe because it relies so much on navy and doesn't have the feels that you're a commander of about a corp size force. Well, that the player controls airplanes not even the original is true but close. Closer.

It's very good indeed. For some graphical glitch I couldn't play it through. They make an Enhanced Edition one day I'll try it again.
These "amnesia" themes in rpgs can be very good - and from here I'll write about tabletop rpgs - it can allow the players to be really involved in the character as it has to be made up on the go by him in his head which sometimes wrong causing more complications and hilarity. I read about a party like that the players got barely filled sheets, only the attributes. The values were rolled so they come out randomly and by luck the wizard type character got relatively high strength, the player ofc thought he's a fighter and tried to play that accordingly.

Also I tried xenonauts. It's very nice, true old x-com in modern form. It's as frustrating as original. I play on veteran and in a good turn I can loose half of my squad. Good thing I didn't choose to iron man.

Oh, our games were always almost like this. We started mostly naked, without any equipment or money, without any knowledge about place where we located, mostly without memory about actions that drove main story. And backstory of characters didn't really matter (although we had full stats). This gives GM freedom to shape campaign, and also pretty fun.

Rutracker has pretty good P:T fan pack with all the necessary fixes, there is no need for Enhanced Edition,

They also made People's General. Not that good I played through a campaign. Artillery shoots faaaaaaaar awaaaaaay, in the base PG2 it feels rewarding to get Marksman commander and get +1 to the shooting range, in this every arty reaches to the other side of the map. Almost.

Tested Open Panzer and it has it's shortcomings.
- Sometimes I can move units to hexes where I shouldn't be able to due to zone of control.
- Sometimes I can resupply airplanes next to an airfield sometimes it only allows me when the plane is right on one of the airfield hexes.
- The odds is well overestimated more often the battle results (much) below of these than not. (Well, this can be bias on my side ofc.)
- Fuel can go below 0.
- Only played the spanish tutorial and now the Warta River scenario but in the second reinforcement arrives at weird places (the game dumped Polish and German units together in the lower right corner).
- Stuff.

Too bad. I just had super fun round. Unfortunately no screenshots because shit was too intense.

Joined game as a chemist. I was still new at this job so I had to constantly check wiki for recipes.
The round started several minutes ago and it seems people already got all their chemical supplies and no one bothered me to make anything, so I proceeded to steal syringe gun from medical bay and started making various toxins for self defense. I prepared syringes with cyanide, chloral hydrate and worse, ready to be shot from the syringe gun. I also turned a cleaner spray into a flamethrower by adding chlorine trifluoride into it. Of course I burned myself couple times with it by accident.

Station around me seemed to be spiraling slowly into chaos, I even saw some suspicious guy in black armor painting ominous runes around medbay, but since no one bothered me I just stayed in my lab and continued to experiment with chemicals. I even made some medicines just in case wounded personnel came and wanted to treat himself.

Then out of fookin nowhere a guy in black armor teleported into my room. I tried to spray him with my home made spray but he was faster and smacked me with his energy weapon. I lost consciousness but I saw he dragged me somewhere and then teleported into some ayylmao like place when another dude put me on the operating table, sliced me open, took some of my organs and replaced it with some weird shit.

I was teleported back to the space station, near my lab. I couldn't stand up and some dude walking by had to help me. I noticed I started shitting eggs every 30 seconds or so. But most importantly, a voice in my head told me I have an objective: take as many drugs as possible. So I started to cook.

Morphine, Space drugs, Meth, you name it. When one portion was done I just took it and continued to work on another. Making meth was dangerous as heating the ingredients too much could cause an explosion but thankfully nothing happened this time. I was constantly high and hallucinating. I saw strange things outside my lab, people in armor running around, blood and human parts, gigantic frog walking around and captain spewing something about HASTUR through intercomm. The worst part is most of it probably wasn't hallucinations but I didn't care as long as I could produce my stuff.

After some time I decided that there's too much chaos around even with my pills so I decided to escape. I went outside armed with my sprayer and syringes, but it was weirdly quiet. I found an bloodied baseball bat on the ground and took it. I went to the security section and decided to break in using my bat. I didn't fear being jailed, security either was already killed by something or maybe there was no security to begin with and I wanted stuff from their armory to protect myself better. Unfortunately the window I tried to break to get in was also electrified so I ended with severe burns. I crawled into maintenance corridor and lost consciousness there.

Thankfully someone found me soon and grabbed back to medical bay. After I was healed my savior tied my hands and took me to some dark place, what the fuck is going on!? He tied me to a chair and started questioning. I didn't understand what the fuck did he wanted from me, but then I realized my character was spewing complete bullshit half the time I tried to talk, without my direct input. The mysterious savior threatened that he will kill me if I won't cooperate but I couldn't make a coherent statement.

Bernd 06/19/2018 (Tue) 01:32:16 [Preview] No.17398 del
I though he's going to shoot me in the head but instead he took me and threw into disposal unit. I believe he wanted to threat me to say things he wanted but decided I'm a lost cause. Anyway I knew I was saved because I used to work at waste disposals earlier and I knew exactly what to do. I jumped off the conveyor belt moment before the crusher at disposals turned me into a meatloaf. I freed myself and ended up in cargo bay office.

Then another dude in armor appeared. But this time I was faster. I quickly grabbed my syringe gun and shot him before he managed to ask a question. Then I sprayed some liquid fire in the air just in case. I missed all the shots but that's ok, it turned out he was a cargo technician and was peaceful. After he was convinced I calmed down he offered to help me. He gave me first aid kit and first thing I did was I analyzed myself with health analyzer I found inside. The screen reads: reduced mouth coordination, severe brain damage, schizophrenia, serious trauma and (worst of all) clownophobia. It looked like it wasn't just drug overdose.

Unfortunately my chemist ID didn't allow me to open doors in cargo bay and the other dude was gone so I started looking for tools to hack the doors. Then he showed up and found me when I was going through the miners office and told me not to do sneaky stuff, so I lied that I was looking for food. It worked, he ordered a space shuttle to bring pizza, meanwhile I freaked him out by hiding inside the miners locker.

After we finished our meal I decided to tell him my story. Of course all that was accompanied by my constant shitting eggs, screaming about THE VOICE and THEM trying to kill me, occasional puke and hallucinating that I'm on fire and screaming for fire extinguisher. Dude said that I'm making him extremely uneasy but despite that he still tried to help me, what a good Samaritan he was! To be honest the only thing he was able to make clear of my ramblings was that I was a chemist and that I did drugs.

Our discussion was then interrupted by the automatic announcement system saying that the escape shuttle has arrived and that we have 3 minutes to board. He grabbed and started pulling into direction of the shuttle. Oh fuck! The shuttle is going to be crowded with all the remaining crew, including all the monsters and the fuckers that tried to kill me. I tried to resist but he was too strong. And then I heard the HONK.

I fell on the ground as I got a panic attack after seeing a clown. At least I was free of my savior's grab. It was also the last time I've seen him as I run in opposite direction. Thankfully I knew exactly where the smaller escape pods are. Hopefully no one used them yet. Then another automatic announcement said that radiation anomaly has been detected and it will hit the station soon. Miraculously, the escape pod was in its place and I managed to reach it and close the blast doors behind me just right before the radiation hit the station. Meanwhile intercom has gone absolutely crazy. I sent a message to my friend via PDA that i'm safe, to which I only got a reply that the shuttle is fucked up. I wanted to reply that I'm in an escape pod but then it launched and I lost contact.

Poor dude. If only he would have listened to a stuttering, schizophrenic drug addict he would have been alive to this day. As I traveled through the space to a safe location I took another one of my fun pills to make my ride more enjoyable.

That was a good shift.

As I mentioned writing an AAR, I might aswell start one. Don't expect anything too deep- I'll post few pictures and brief, game-centered narrations.

I'm playing Darkest Hour on its WWI scenario with the UK. Britain allows me to play a small part in the dreadful attrition struggle in the West, mighty naval battles with the Kaiserliche Marine and an entertaining second front against the Ottomans. Most other powers, with the important exception of Germany would be either a challenge to play or dull static defense. Thus, for an inexperienced player like myself, Britain and Germany are essentially the only good choices.

The scenario begins at late June. I start with zero manpower, but six infantry divisions and a dozen battleships at the production queue; thus, I order two batches of x10 convoy transports on serial production (i.e. I'll keep producing more after these ones finish). My merchant marine is massive, but it'll face attrition from submarines.

I appoint James Wolfe-Murray to Minister of the Army (or was it Minister of Armaments?) for extra manpower and John Simon to Minister of Security for reduced consumer goods need. My seven tech slots are mostly dedicated to industry and the Army, as I'm ahead on naval tech but lag behind on, amongst other things, Land doctrines, which Germany is several steps ahead of me.

My armies are reorganized into 3-division Infantry Corps. Three divisions guard the eastern coast, one division opresses the Irish, two x2 Cavalry Corps will be sent to Egypt and a force of 17 infantry divisions and an HQ is readied at Dover to fight on Europe. Outside of the Isles, I have 1 infantry and 1 cavalry division at the Cape, 3 infantry divisions at Egypt, several garrisons and a number of colonial militias. The Commonwealth has weak armies at the beginning - India has many divisions, but besides a single Australian infantry division everyone just has militias.

My fleets are reorganized to hunt small enemy fleets in the Mediterranean and block Germany at the Channel and the Scotland-Norway block. Why 12/18/30? Each naval leader has a maximum of ships he can effectively command according to his rank. You can increase a commander's rank at will, but that lowers his skill level. Sadly I promoted one of my good admirals to a 30-ship leader, bringing his skill down to 2. Each fleet, of course, has an equal number of capital ships and screens. Submarines and transports are kept in separate fleets and surplus screens stay in port as "reserves". For instance, I sent six light cruisers to Alexandria as my Mediterranean reserves.

Austria DoWs Serbia on the 8th of August, and Germany invades France three days later. I immediately enact Partial Mobilization (giving me a million manpower and weakening my industry) and ship 18 divisions to Dunkirk. The Germans smash through Belgian defenses, but are stopped at Bruges by my troops and what was left of Belgium's army, led by the King himself. Their advance into France is a province deep from Eastern Belgium/Luxembourg. From Western Belgium, the right flank of their advance gets several provinces deep, but relentless French counterattacks turned it into a back-and-forth struggle that the Entente is currently winning. The front is still fluid there and hasn't fully settled into trench warfare.

In the East, Russia fares poorer than historically and loses all of Poland and some of the Ukraine.

Germany's colonies are a nuisance; with travel times measured in months and far more provinces than divisions, their colonial militias sneak deep into Entente Africa. So far only Togo has been neutralized. In the Far East, I sent a single Aussie militia to Papua New Guinea and am otherwise waiting for Japan to do the heavy lifting.

War with the Ottoman Empire begins a few days after the war's outbreak, giving me 10 dissent. Together with my minister appointments and the "War Bonds" decision (which gave me free cash and supplies), this gave me a sizable dissent hit. I used the "Press Censorship" and "War Propaganda" decisions, along with a special early war decision giving -5 dissent, to minimize it, but I still had around 3 dissent, harming my industry. I thus only built a single artillery brigade and focused most of my factories to consumer goods production, which neutralized my dissent by December. I then ordered one more infantry division, five destroyer flotillas and over a dozen artillery brigades. Brigade production is generally considered a bad strategy in this game, but I want to leverage my industry to minimize manpower losses and thus delay further mobilization (which harms my industry even more).

The war in the Middle East is a stalemate, aside from Yemen which joined the war on behalf of their Turkish masters and got crushed by six Indian divisions. Massive armies stare at each other on the Sinai and Palestine, where the Ottomans have strong border forts and numerical advantage. Kuwait was hastily reinforced, but right now I'm planning a Mesopotamian operation - I have a decision to annex southwest Persia, which will allow me to strike from a new angle and distract the Turks.

One thing irks, me, however: I have a decision to prepare for the Dardanelles campaign. I don't have any divisions to spare and my prospects of winning are minimal, but the reward is great and my window for opportunity is closing as Bulgaria will join the Central Powers next year. Should I try my luck at a risky Dardanelles operation?

So far I've stopped at Christmas. Last pic is what the fronts look at the moment.

This is why I couldn't play nor this and HoI2. When I started to play a little I also started to read about the game and when it turned out the best strategy is spamming long queueueueues of basic infantry then it became much less interesting for me. Then I gave up.

This issue is one of the most easily solved, though: most mods decrease the IC cost of brigades to make them useful. Similarly, nonsensical border connections (such as the border between Libya and Chad being open, which the AI with its obnoxious "gotcha!" attitude always invades with massive armies and breaks your immersion).

But other problems are hard or impossible to solve:
>AI submarine doomstacks capable of wiping out your fleets
>AI naval invasions far beyond the range of their transports
>lazy US AI keeping a dozen divisions in Iceland and not taking part in a single land battle for the whole war
>not being able to ship supplies to allied ports
>doomstack-based combat
>AI using armored and motorized divisions as if they were foot infantry, completely unaware of their speed
>a systemic problem with the Hearts of Iron series: an unrealistic representation of combat in areas with more provinces than divisions
>another systemic problem: research and production systems that understate the capabilities of small nations
And so on. As you've said, sometimes one or two peeves in a Paradox game are enough to cause a permanent ragequit.

But what's great about Darkest Hour is the ability to completely take over control of your allies' armies.

In TOAW it isn't doable. If I remember correctly the more unit is stacked on a hex the heavier casualties they will suffer as it means they have to stand more close to each other on the battlefield, more target will be in the open for the lack of cover so more bullets can hit the mark. This forces the player to plan battles better. But TOAW is very different in general.

I've played until October 1915. First I'll discuss what happened outside of the Middle East.

The bold French offensive kept on for five more months, taking massive casualties but liberating Belgium up to the Meuse. A bridgehead was then established on Liege, but quickly pushed back. Several German counteroffensives then failed to cross the river, and trench warfare finally set in. The first British air battle of the war took place in these combats, and ended inconclusively -low tech air wings are too weak to cause any major damage to ground units or each other.

In the North Sea, I had a decision to blockade Germany by parking my fleets in front of German ports. My numerical advantage made it easy to do, but to my disappointment, all it did was a slight nerf to German IC. I then kept my fleets parked, and thus every once in a while they wiped out pairs of clueless DDs and CLs returning to port. A few months later, the same happened to a pair of German battleships, but the ensuing battle damaged some of my own and I had to shuffle around my fleets and send one of them back to port. And for some unexplained reason, Germany later lost that nerf and I myself got an event telling me that my ports were blockaded, even though no German ships were in sight and nearly the entire Kaiserliche Marine was stuck in port!

Production-wise all of my divisions in the Western front are furnished with extra artillery by June and I shift my industry to more infantry divisions, interceptors, bombers, and, for variety's sake, armored cars and super heavy artillery (even Canada is building it!). Divisions in the Middle East did not receive any artillery due to the importance of mobility in that front. I also upgraded a few militia divisions to infantry.

Italy entered the war on the 25th of March. They took a single province in Tyrol and then stopped. With the Western front reduced to a defensive position, I managed to ship six divisions to their aid. Casualty rates in that front are the worst I've seen.

Serbia gives up on the 22th of April, in large part due to an ill-conceived plan of mine to ship all of their divisions to the Middle East -it worked for Belgium in WWII, but was a disaster now; Serbs just disbanded their divisions and went back home upon learning of their defeat.

Greece joins on the 13th of May. A n Indian corps earkmarked for Palestine was immediately sent to reinforce them, and over time I dispatched more and more divisions, allowing me to launch a minor offensive into Skopje to secure better defensive positions.

Bulgaria entered the war on the 5th of March.

In Africa, Kamerun falls to the French by May and Von Lettow Vorbeck surrenders with a ragtag band of just 50 men in June. Divisions are slowly transfered to the Middle East.

Russia continues to fail, with the Central Powers encircling several divisions and reaching Kiev and the Baltics. Their revolt risk is high, and there was even an uprising in Finland. Revolution is imminent.

The following table is a comparison of Commonwealth troop strengths on several theatres on four different moments:

Number of divisions

The increase is not just from my own production of infantry divisions, but also from the arrival of Commonwealth forces from abroad -two Canadian corps in the West, two Australian corps in the Middle East and a New Zealander infantry division in Iraq. The Anzacs, however, are annoying to handle: for some reason you can't just embark a division in transport ships on Wellington and tell them to ship it off to Alexandria; instead, one must ship them to Brisbane, Darwin, Singapore, Colombo etc. And manually check if they've arrived at each of those stops, which I always forget to do.

On to the Middle East.

The Senussi annex most of Libya by event. I'm aware they'll start a war later on and keep a cavalry division at the border. Meanwhile, I leave Kuwait with just a few militia divisions and concentrate everything on Alexandria. To my surprise, those militias (including Kuwait's 1870 model cavalry) fight off an Ottoman attack.

I also take a "preparations for the Dardanelles Operation" decision which gives me a free division and 3 transports, and another decision to annex Thessaloniki. I even shipped 6 divisions from France to Egypt. All in all, I had around 16 divisions and 15 battleships ready for the gamble. Most were waiting in Thessaloniki when the battleships engaged an Austrian fleet of equal size in an inconclusive battle that ended with a single casualty -the HMS Hercules (BB).

However, three events forced me to change plans in March: Bulgaria joined the Central Powers, blocking any attack into Thrace, the Senussi declared war and Russian advances into Anatolia led the Ottomans to weaken their defences in Palestine. My armies abandoned Thessaloniki, with three cavalry divisions (plus two militias transferred from East Africa) putting down the Libyans, a handful supporting an opportunity offensive into Palestine and the rest following the Mesopotamia invasion plan I had previously laid out.

The Senussi surrendered by event in July. Mesopotamia was a slow grind at the beginning due to an overreliance on militias and a large number of enemies, with the Russians breaking into Baghdad while I was still struggling with Kut. An encirclement attempt was blocked by divisions retreating from Basra, but a few other divisions in Kut weren't as lucky.

From Palestine, Eilat and Gaza fell by May and the Porte reached its breaking point. Only a few divisions with low organization faced me, and my armies (aswell as some 3 French divisions) pressed onwards to Syria with little casualties. Mustafa Kemal led a cavalry division, but his tactical genius was not enough. Another encirclement attempt failed: a division cornered in Transjordan escaped through Jabal Shammar (the northern Arab state), which gives transit rights to the Ottoman Empire. It remained there, unable to break out.
Damascus fell by July, and the Russians attacked from Iraq into Syria. Expecting little resistance, 3 Indian divisions with shore bombardment support from 2 battleships bumped into an equal number of relatively well entrenched Ottoman divisions and suffered heavy casualties before reinforcements arrived.

By the time Aleppo fell, those Ottoman divisions that had faced me in Basrah had found themselves surrounded in northeastern Syria. About six of them surrended in Qamishli. Another division surrended in Antioch when my divisions captured the province north of it.

With the entire Fertile Crescent subdued, massive dissent in the home front and many divisions annihilated, Anglo-Russian troops thus stood poised to flood into Anatolia and put the sick man of Europe out of his misery by September. The pressure was too much and they sued for peace by late October, giving up the Fertile Crescent to me and France, most of western Armenia to Russia and Smyrna & Thrace (without Constantinople) to Greece.

Because of how treaties work in this game, the Australian divisions that were in Anatolia by the time of the armistice have been strategically redeployed back to their forsaken continent. Maybe I'll have to edit the savegame to bring them back, because it wouldn't be realistic to waste 4-5 more months bringing them back.

My current plan for the future is to gather all forces that were tied up in the Ottoman Empire, ship them to Greece and launch an offensive to decisively knock Bulgaria out of the war. I have to act quickly, as Russia is about to collapse.

Bernd 06/25/2018 (Mon) 08:53:16 [Preview] No.17515 del
That's WWI. So much loss for so little gain.
To win this war one have to concentrate on one front to break, and keep just enough forces on others to hold the shortest line possible. I think it's a good idea to try the Balkans. Hard landscape for an offensive but from Serbia it's an easy way into Hungary which would help the Italian front.
But into Germany the easy way is from the west and east and not from south or southeast. Of course I know the game has an event system and we have a knowledge on course of the war so most likely there's no real reason to do that.

Ignoring frozen terrain and snow, the French start another offensive in the West in late November, with Belgians (under my command) and Britons soon joining in. A quarter million men die (an unrealistically low casualty rate and battle time for the Western Front), but Arlon and Longwy are liberated. A German counterattack into Nancy is beaten back, and the stalemate returns.

Around that time, my first engineer and super heavy artillery brigades are deployed to the Western Front, and modern infantry equipment arrives. My doctrines are still outdated, though.

With the Turk defeated, Bulgaria is the next target. I plan to gather 65 divisions and 3 bomber wings (The entire Greek army, almost all that I had on the Eastern front and six divisions from the Western Front) and attack by January; however, an apparently undermanned enemy line convinced me to begin the first stage before everything was in place.

The plan envisioned the encirclement and destruction of two Bulgarian divisions at the Aegean Coast and a pincer movement from Thessaloniki and Greek Thrace towards Sofia. An abundance of divisions allowed the last-minute inclusion of an attack against Burgas.

The enemy was overwhelmed by numbers: Sofia fell after a month of fighting, and the divisions at the Aegean, shelled by 15 battleships, surrendered a week later. The only setback was a successfullarge German counterattack on our left flank in Macedonia, which was guarded only by the Greeks. Mutinies spread through the Bulgarian army on the 8th of February, and two Australian divisions attacked Varna on the following day. Bulgaria sued for peace on February 10, and was allowed to keep its annexed territories -for now.

This creates a new strategic situation -the only point of contact between the Entente and the Central Powers in the Balkans is Albania, where rough terrain, African infrastructure and a narro w front prevent any offensive operations.
This leaves the West as our last viable front. The Greek army and four Commonwealth divisions will advance into Tirana whilst everything else, aswell as a dozen fresh divisions and reinforcements from Portugal, which has just joined the Entente, will regroup in Belgium. As soon as the ice thaws, a massive offensive will then take as much territory as possible.

What makes an attack in the West urgent is the impending Russian collapse. German and Austrian troops are on the gates of Petrograd, a dozen rebellious provinces stretch all the way to the Far East and strikes paralyse the country. Entente superiority in the West is only temporary.

From game files it seems Romania will only enter the war if the Entente has set foot in Galicia or Hungary, which ahistorically never took place in this game, either because of a German overcommitment to the East or an unrealistically weak Russia.

How typical for Romanians to go ahead and kick into someone who is already on the floor... at least if I interpret the developers message correctly... Oh, excuse me, I couldn't miss the opportunity.
Is there a possibility for Romania to join Central Powers?

Bernd 07/05/2018 (Thu) 00:54:29 [Preview] No.17731 del
ROM - Romania.txt only has the following events:
>### 2023500 : Hungary is invaded!
>### 2023501 : Galicia is invaded !
>### 2023502 : Armistice !
>### 2023503 : Treaty of Bucarest

So the only way they could join the Central Powers would be by the game's dynamic diplomacy system, though I don't know how that works and it'd be extremely unlikely.

Probably AI doesn't calculate with them and it needs the player the bring them to the table. So a player with a Central Power power could seek alliance with them.

No classes, restrictions n shit, you just invest xps directly into your desired skill points, and hybrids of warrior/mage works because certain type of spells get bonuses if you're stronger etc. It's turn based and based on rather not very popular system.
Shadowrun crpgs were quite neat too. Also turn based on its own thing.
And for real time crpgs you could try Gothic, with simple arcade combat.
There are many games from this genre that doesn't try to copy D&D.

They run on mine, it's a decade old config.
Returns has Linux version somewhere on the internets and I guess all the other have I just couldn't find one available.
Returns is also the most railroadtrack style but I prefer it over Dragonfall. The best one is Hong Kong and I was inclined to start to develop a mod campaign as a continuation of that but ofc it would be too big of a project, one more unfinished.
I think the rpg and battle system is a bit simplistic but it's fine by me.
If you really try and turns out they run on your machine a little tip: Etiquettes in Return have two purpose: 1. cosmetic, 2. they result various amount of money in certain situations. In DF and HK they have more influence on the events.

More not-D&D crpgs I would recommend:

Divinity: Original Sin
Has it's own fighting system implemented. Similarities with dnd ends with attribute names. Also it's turn based. Quite big focus on combat and on hard difficulty (aka tactician mode) every enemy encounter will require player to use all of his wits (I literally died on tutorial battle). The same battle can end with almost no wounds on your side or total annihilation on your team depending only how well the player is using his characters, rng bullshit have little to say in this game.
Story is some sort of typical heroes saving the world, also it's not super serious but I liked it.

Divine Divinity
Diablo but it's actually an rpg, like with dialogs and quests. Same universe as above. Even less serious story.

Mass Effect 1 and 2
I think everyone know those. I'm not recommending ME3 as crpg.

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines
Great crpg based on tabletop game. Set in modern world, you play as a vampire belonging to a vampire community which want to keep existence of those dark creatures a secret, meanwhile performing tasks that would basically fit into mafias. Some horror elements included.
There was also another game based on this tabletop game called Vampire the masquerade: Redemption but it was more of a HnS rather then crpg.

D&D is just a good solution when you have no time to properly create your own system. Balance is pretty hard thing and D&D has years of testing.

Although conceptually tabletop systems aren't good to computers because they are built with dices and human players in mind. Many things may be done better but made simplier to make game playable at table.

After many months i decided to check back on Rimworld and I'm surprised that they actually reached version 1.0 already aka this is what is actually going to be released and it's no longer beta. Aside from more items and such there's a one big feature I love. You can now form a caravan and visit other places on the planet, trade in allied camps or raid them, abandon your colony and build a new and even run multiple colonies at once. Also refugees calling for help will often be outside your map and require your rescue party to travel couple of hours or even days. There are also sort of like quests like delivering certain items or destroying bandit camps.

I started as a primitive tribe with 5 people and decided to build a one big mansion with open area inside. First year was quite peaceful and resulted in recruited in many more tribe members. I pretty much accepted anyone from refugees, travelers and prisoners, as I figured with our shitty medicine and protection equipment access I'll be having lots of dead people on my side. My idea was to get to medieval tech with swords, plate armors and bows and somehow try to conquer others via old ways. I actually got pretty lucky and got my hands on a good revolver and 2 excellent power armors at the beginning.
Everything went to shit during winter 2nd year. All my skilled warriors were at least 1 day away from main base on a quest to murder some faggots when I got attacked by an enemy clan. I gathered all my peasants in a desperate defense and somehow managed to beat heavily armored band with knives and sticks. Unfortunately my farmland was set on fire and my tribesmen were so heavily wounded they could barely fight it.
As a result I lost 3 of my men (not immediately, some died later because of infection or starvation) and barely survived to summer when new crops could grow. It was so bad people were considering eating their dead fellows.

Black - a designated tribe chief because he had the biggest social skill and can't shoot people. And yes, he is a nigger with a bowl hat, you have a problem with that!?

Trout - Black's mother. He is superior when it comes to killing and is also a master craftsman(woman?) responsible for creating all those legendary tier bows that are deadlier then the most firearms found on this planet.

Crab - our superior constructor and also able killer. Until he took a 9mm bullet to his brain. He survived but he can barely function. I have no heart to euthanase him though.

Lemur - born killer. My most dangerous warrior.

That's were my original tribe members end. There was also dude called Elephant but he died in that disastrous winter. Don't remember what was his specialization.

Takashi - a refugee, first addition to my tribe. Lost an arm in a fight, but still can fight almost as good as Lemur.

Arty - probably no one important.

Joaquin - superior doctor. Used to be a raider but joined my cause after persuasion.

Humps - also probably no one important.

Cockroach - another raider who joined me. Tries to be a good warrior but lacks compared to the others.

Bean and Green - I think they're just good at farming hauling and cleaning. Peasants.

Andy - freshest addition. Somewhat good at shooting, perhaps another warrior in the future?

You can move around planet almost freely with your party and also complete certain quests like this. When you're on the move you can take any amount of men, equipment and animals from your home area. You need food for travel obviously but skilled gathers can supply you during the road. Any additional gear like armors and weapons can be freely changed. Stuff like medicine and bedrolls will be used in appropriate moments. How much you carry, how well your colonists can move, how much they can carry and how big your party is affects how fast you move on the global map. Size of your party also affects your visibility. You can get unexpected encounter like traders but also enemies like this deadly manhunting rabbit.

Oh shit he dodged all the bullets and arrows and is heading straight to Lemur's neck. Will our heroes survive this encounter?

Sounds like that medic could come in handy.
How about farming indoors? It's independent from seasons and covered by disasters. Except electricity fuckups.

Good shit tho. Nice reading. Me rikey.

Previously I mentioned I found a few open source and free as in library space flight/trading/combat games, namely: Endless Sky, Oolite, Pioneer and Vega Strike (with a total conversion of it, the Privateer Gemini Gold which is a remake of Wing Commander: Privateer).
Time to times I find myself getting enthusiastic about such games I still got the hots for Hardwar (while it's not really a spaceship simulator and I don't play it anymore and never finished the actual campaign, just roamed around on Titan in single player) and reinstall Freelancer once in a while (sometimes I put the Discovery mod above it).
Freelancer is great but I finishing the single player campaign once was enough and just fighting, mining, trading, scouting gets old fast. It also has problems and can be criticized it's oversimplified space mechanics (basically no physics in that game which should govern space flight and one can roam around regardless of gravitation and such, everything is on the same plain, the scale of things and other stuff) but actually that makes easily playable and the controls straightforward.
But now I decided to check it out these others as they are also native to Linux - being cross platforms - which is great.

Oh, one thing I really would want in such game is some base management. Owning a station to use it as a base of operation, for storing shit or use it for trading like in Hardwar - or maybe it was in a mod for Hardwar I'm not sure. I know in multiplayer Freelancer player factions can have their own bases and stuff.

After a tiny peek I can tell this:
1. Vega Strike was updated in 2014 last time and when I tried to install from .deb it said there are dependencies which can't be met. Probably with compiling from source this problem could be solved. Or not, I won't go there just yet.
2. Dl-d Privateer Gemini Gold but haven't checked it yet.
3. Oolite is an Elite remake of course I was familiar with the name already. Played around in the tutorial looks interesting but the graphics (well, the HUD otherwise it's fine) and the controls feels somewhat dated.
4. Pioneer... this looks somewhat too realistic. Tried a first flight I crashed into the nearest building just after launch. Then I took a look on the keyboard configuration and tried again. I managed to leave Earth, well, I reached 50-60 kms above surface then I got shot down by the police because I shot my laser as I tested things out and it is forbidden on Earth. Oh well. I will revisit this game because while it needs to get used to it, it looks promising - but maybe a bit too realisitic, we'll see.
5. Endless Sky. I think once I played this few years ago. The grapchics was a little different. This is a 2d top-down view game with some third dimension elements. Kinda simplistic but fun. I decided to write in AAR style or rather Captain's Log style posts of this as I play a little.

I've tried it long ago. It is just another open source game that was planned to be big but will never be even playable. Just a carcass without features, but filled with bugs.

As far as I remember, Elite 2 or 3 had such rules. Or they just take your money as fine.

I bought my first ship on New Boston, my home planet where I was born. It's a Sparrow class light interceptor. They said most pilots die fast in this. Hah, losers. I baptised her Autism Space Ship Borg or ASS Borg.
Right at the docks I was approached by an oldtimer, a captain who's just retired. He asked me to transport him to New Greenland in the Arcturus system in exchange for a few tips for a beginner such as myself. I agreed to do it and bought some medical supplies as well as he advised me. I also bought a map for the star systems around. Launched the ship then maneuvered a bit to familiarize myself with the controls. Then I planned my route on the map and activated the hyperdrive. Off I went.

We arrived safely at New Greenland and the ol' cap'n gave me a small sum of money. Then at the docks he found another job for me, to play the role of chaperone for a trader who is harassed by pirates. I accepted the offer as my ride ain't really suitable for trade but fighting should be right up in his alley.

After I got disabled in the first fight I checked the controls which key is used to fire my weapons and reloaded.
After two jumps I got killed in a dogfight. These lasers suck ass.

Third times the charm. I pushed for jumps rather than fight and reached our destination, a planet called Gemstone. Here I got my payment. The ol' cap'n dude is still hanging around and went to find another job for me. I've some cash to invest into weaponry but no outfitter on this planet.
Also it's time to git gud in dogfights because I don't want to rely on the save/load function but I also don't want to restart every time I die.
Beside this it will be advisable to learn to recognize when to fight and when to run, so getting used to the radar and such will help. I should read the documentation or at least parts of it.

So on Gemstone I got a new mission with the help of the ol' cap'n. I've no idea if my ship can actually outrun anything.
Well, I made it. The star system was three jumps away which seems the maximum amount for this little guy. I was attacked but I jumped immediately. After we arrived I had a conversation with the ol' cap'n and it seems this will be the way of doing things until I get a stronger iron below my ass. This small fighter really sucks.
I bought another map because choosing the next jump target every time I arrive delay the jump with few more seconds which might be a bit dangerous. Also I don't know if there's a wormhole or whatever from one system to another until I visit the system but a map show the routs.

This loan I have to pay interest on and is biting in my profit. I started my first job (by my choice) with just over 100K and the job payed over 20K but my money was just at 112K when I finished it. They subtract from my cash a hefty sum every day. I'm not sure how much time pass during jumps but I see notifications about the payment. I think when I take off from a planet and than land back to it that adds one day. So I have to pay back the loan fast, or at least reach a low number so the interest will be less.
It will be advisable to choose jobs with good route length/payment ratio so I'll spend less time with traveling.
I could also earn a few dimes trading in parallel with the jobs. Just need to pick up commodities if the price difference is known.

Ah Earth. The Cradle of Humanity.

Real time. When the player is on a planet the time is frozen but when he launches back to space what awaits him there is totally random and not the continuation what he left behind when he landed. So the space flight is real time and ships can follow him through hyperspace to the next system.
There are random missions, like hauling some cargo to another system, or transporting passengers or escorting traders. There supposed to be a campaign as well I'm not sure how it starts I'm not that far ahead I know it from the manual which is more like a short description of things and tips. The developer plans more campaigns but for now it's just the one.
It's really fast paced game, a mission can be done under a minute: accept mission, open map, plan route, lift off, initiate a jump by pushing the J, the ship jumps automatically (up to three times for now, the fuel is enough only that much) then push L to land. Done.
Space fight however is very tedious in this little machine with two tiny laser pointer. I suspect I can't kill anything. However I can maneuver away and jump before they could kill me, also friendlies are very violent toward aggressors so they can stop them.

Bernd 07/20/2018 (Fri) 19:46:06 [Preview] No.18018 del
Right now the best jobs are escort jobs. I mean escorting trader ships to other systems... There's nothing lewd in this game. So far. They can pay 20K credits for a three jump ride. Best payers are rushed deliveries with 35-40K, but they usually need 9+ jumps which means extra days traveled, ergo less money.
Also savegames are essential. It's so random what's awaits me above the planet and some can kill me just with a huge salvo. Autosave is a very nice function and it's activated just before departure.
I accepted a job to a system far away from the last known because that's the only one that pays somewhat well. It's far away in it's in The Deep which is a dangerous part of the galaxy. Or at least the traveling traders said so in their broadcast.
I start from Arcturus and the first part will be a three jump travel to Phecda. The second is also a three jumps travel to Zosma. From there it will be unknown but I count on three or four more jumps.
I was killed after the first jump from Phecda in Tania Australis. Interesting feature that the game continues, so no "Game Over" and similar messages.
On the second try Tania Australis was the most peaceful place ever. Such cases.

I landed on Memory, a planet in Zosma system. Interesting outfits (ship parts) can be purchased here: "atomic" steerings and thrusters. On most planets with outfitters there are only ion and plasma engines, one is smaller the other is stronger I think. But these atomic stuff look great. They are strong and small, but expensive as fuck and produce much heat. I dunno yet how heat can be handled (I saw cooling units for sale tho) and how much difficulty it does but with these puppies in this light ship could make huge difference in maneuver and speed. I could fit a pair in.
Price is very steep, especially with the mortgage and the constant reduction.
I bought a map and it's almost clear there will be four jumps from Zosma to Regor. I have to land on the planet Valhalla in the Epsilon Leonis system, to refuel the hyperdrive (this is automatic and free - it seems - just like repairs), because I don't know what's await for me in the next system and if I will be able to do that there.
I found a shipyard on Valhalla with a few options. They are expensive but good to know I can buy something more substantial here then my current bird. This Berzerker looks good but I've no idea the worth of ships in this game. Yet.
Arrived to my destination in order. Here on the planet Windblain they also sell atomic stuff. Prices are fixed everywhere so it doesn't matter where one buy his ship components.
But that's it for today.
I wonder how much I have to grind until the story picks me up again.

A couple of months ago I tried a voxel-style game for the first time: Minetest. I've been playing a little bit each weekend since then.

Minetest is like a 'game framework': more than a game engine, less than a full-fledged game. You are supposed to install a special kind of mod that implements the gameplay. I've been playing the default one though.

After a few minutes of 'playing' I discovered that there aren't really any goals in that 'game', so I decided to set myself one: to completely map out the first cave I find.

I am almost done. The Primordial cavern system is completely explored now and just need to map the final passages and crevices. After having found a few other caves I have to say I was lucky to run into one which is actually mappable in a reasonable amount of time; some of the cave systems produced by the map generator V7 can be extremely large and maddeningly labyrinthine.

The video shows me walking from the spawn point to the last un-mapped region of Primordial. Unfortunately there's some stutter as my toaster can't quite handle the game and the screen recording together.

Would play as it reminds me of Rage with all that's scriptiness, driving around and mindless shooting... and I very much enjoyed it. However I found it absolute railroady and short and judging by this vid I think it will be much similar in this perspective as well. Shit like "let's pick up that pistol from the table" are feels like empty gestures to make the game more realistic. Do I have to put my stuff there? Then it's just overcomplicate things and will become annoying chore if not it's just an empty notion because who the fuck would do it. Ofc there are people who enjoy such things just look at the "hardcore" mods for Fallout 3 or the "hardcore" mode in New Vegas. Wow I have to eat (ie I have to click on shit on my pip boy in regular intervals) so much realism!

Great. ShaRun Hong Kong started to crash at startup saying can't open shit in requested resolution. Up until now it was fine. Fucked around nothing helped. Now reinstall coz found an UGC campaign I want to try. Takes forever to install it so no playing today. Doesn't matter much.
I'm still toying with the idea to make a campaign for it. Won't ofc.
I really liked the Hong Kong's and have in my mind a sketch of a continuation of it. Basically the hero and the runners would help the triad to establish itself in Seattle (as HK EE ends with this intention, and the triad basically owns the runners). Wouldn't be easy task as it would have to be story driven. The player character and his/her team is maxed out by the end of HK EE so the player would get very minimal XP reward so the character wouldn't be a one man team, expert in everything, samurai-decker-mage-shaman-rigger-adept all-in-one. Maybe a little rounding out but that's it. The reward also couldn't be overpowered equipment it would make everything either piss easy or unrealistic. So the reward itself should be the story itself. This demands extremely good writing, unexpected twists, dark humor, plausible lingo, no (major) plot holes. Also meaningful decisions, well planned and built maps, original NPC-s and maybe unique features. This ain

Found a cross-platform fantasy rpg, called Balrum. Fights are turn based, the walking around is real time. Haven't played two minutes and I've never heard of this before so I can't tell you much. Skill and not class based, that one I know.

Bernd 10/03/2018 (Wed) 20:05:12 [Preview] No.19720 del
A little bit awkward the controls. The PC is fixed in the middle of the screen so when he walks the screen moves with him. This makes difficult to click on objects around and there's lot of stuff to interact with, containers and pickable items alike. But you can't just click on an item to go there and interact with it, this only can be done if you stand next to the item. Then you want to talk to someone, this can be done from a distance but people around tend to walk about as well so not just you are the one who moves but them as well and mostly in an unpredictable fashion.
Lots of reading the conversations are, I dunno if it's bad coz the time doesn't stop I dunno how much depends on the timing of stuff, if the player can miss something because of this. I'm not against reading. Nevertheless the PC has needs to satisfy as the time goes on, rest, hunger, thirst which can have good and bad effects on the hero (giving bonuses when fulfilled and negatives when neglected). Personally I don't like this needs stuff, it's just distraction from the story and annoyance on the long run. More unnecessary clicks. They want it to make it realistic? Then why not just implement bladder fullness and bowel movements too? Bah. Pointless.
The game has a crafting system. Personally I'm not fond of this thing either as usually this just makes games grindy. Over 1488 recipes for cooking, plethora of ingredients, hoards of different effects of the meals one can produce. Anyone will read all this and try to micromanage his stats this way? Then ofc there's alchemy, blacksmithing and carpentry. I know there are people who are very enthusiastic about this for some reason, I'm just not.
Fighting is somewhat interesting there are stuff on the map that blocks line of sight for archery (ofc I chose this as a talent and right now this is my primary way of fighting creatures) but it's just click-click-click then done (or die). Oh btw the PC has a pet by default I think not by choice. It's a dog and helps fighting. All right. I'm just feel a little bad for the poor fella when giant spiders are biting his calf. Oh well.
This is my first impression.

Do they interfere with inventory space or are expensive/hard to achieve enough to be a significant concern? If not, they really are just a meaningless distraction. It's like food items in S.T.A.L.K.E.R when you already have thousands of rubles: just a minor weight burden for long trips and nothing more.

Inventory is fairly large and items are stackable and I can't find weight limit. Farming is also possible so for example making giant wheat field than creating huge stacks of bread could negate hunger easily, bout 3-4 breads/day is enough, so it's just an annoyance to open up the inventory and click on the bread regularly.
Gaining more Vitality (which is a primary ability) helps to combat needs.

Some fights aren't fair at all.
I attack some lvl 1 rats with lower HP than mine. I can blind it for a few turns which is nice, also my pet can be involved so now two of us and he can cause bleeding, the rat shouldn't be a problem. But it spawns two others immediately and they overwhelm us.
Lvl 1 tick. It has range attack which outreaches my bow's range and more HP. Also the attack has high damage and nasty side effects (right now I'm not sure what it is, there are wide range of side effects in the game: paralization, freeze, illnesses, etc.) I'm ded in an seconds.

The most efficient way of leveling up is doing quests, chiefly side quests but I run out of these quickly, I'm kinda stuck at lvl 2. Combat gives minor XP reward, and considering most fights are dangerous and some impossible grinding by killing creatures isn't possible.
Maybe I'm missing something.

Oh also the Linux version I could obtain is an older version.

T4 is better then the 5th installment. In 5 you have to do the same thing over and over, building the same things throughout the ages over and over, in 4 there's some variety at least. Here if I want I can start the economy with tourism right at the beginning for example, I don't nee to go through the techs again and again. The campaign is also more engaging. Ofc on the long run this is just as boring, so it's just a little fun for the weekend.

Scary as shit.

I played very little with V2. The scale is absolutely different, in T4 where one can know all his subject by name. And job. And thought. And needs. From 50 to few thousand tops I guess (in campaign it's just few hundred). In V2 one deals with the faceless masses. All the mechanics are simplified of course.
People making couples and move in together while there's a church no actual marriage takes place. Then no babies just grade school kids and high schoolers. And interestingly the teens only go to high when there are job opening with that kind of education level. Then people are getting old and become pensioners. I'm not sure if the aging takes realistic length. It can be influenced by clinics and hospitals which can offer three types of service: preserving health (people become less frequently sick), influence fertility rate and life longevity. People can die of bad healthcare, hunger, violence (if they are soldiers or become rebels) and natural disasters. No accidents happen.
Btw all kinds of statistics exist for demography with bunch of lists. One can view his people by age, job, education level, pay etc.
The people are divided by pay and educational level but it influence not much. A professor with 20 $ pay will live in a shack just the same as the other homeless, jobless and uneducated peeps. One job can make a difference tho: military personnel can live in Army Bases with fairly high level of comfort and care.
They are divided into factions I think such "pressure groups" also exist in V2, not sure. Here they can be capitalist, commie, militarist, intelligentsia, religious, nationalist, environmental, loyalist and they can be member in several. They all need several things to be satisfied, but this usually can be done easily.
Basically these factions are the politics. If their satisfaction is low, they will demand new elections and vote for the rival. I don't know how other candidates are chosen. El Presidente can give speeches to win over voters, this is absent feature in V2.

Lots of stuff can be told, more than the above, so maybe it has kinda deep mechanics, but still one can play safely by ignoring almost everything and just keep an eye on happiness (and different areas of that), unemployment and the available funds. So kinda superficial.

Bernd 10/16/2018 (Tue) 16:06:21 [Preview] No.20108 del
To demographic.
Ofc if a home is available and the person has enough pay they'll move in. I'm not sure how much they're willing to spend on living. I would guess bout the third of their wage or little more. They also spend it on entertainment as food and healthcare is free on Tropico.
Also a person will seek for such job which fit his/her highest educational level (3 levels: uneducated, high school, college) if no such job is available then moves one level below and so on. Peeps with grade school behind their back counts as uneducated.

Very cyberpunk.

It does sound deeper than Victoria II in several aspects, but not my cup of tea.
How malleable are the population's desires and pressure group choices? In Victoria II it all depends on socioeconomic factors (literacy, urbanization, social class, etc.) that can only be changed in the span of decades, and -quite realistically- the government's options to shift it in the short term are limited.

>El Presidente can give speeches to win over voters, this is absent feature in V2.
Well, every election cycle you get events to nudge public opinion a specific policy within a specific region, and your choices are often worded to imply a speech. But it's not clear what exactly is taking place, as you can defend policies that go against your own government's aswell as policies that don't even exist at the time (like a Planned Economy in 1836).

>one can play safely by ignoring almost everything and just keep an eye on happiness (and different areas of that), unemployment and the available funds.
Same problem with Victoria II. Its underlying systems are very deep, but it ultimately boils down to
>promote bureaucrats
>promote clergymen
>promote craftsmen for the rest of the game
Aside from promoting soldiers and perhaps clerks and capitalists, there's nothing else you'll ever do with POP promotion.

Bernd 10/17/2018 (Wed) 05:30:31 [Preview] No.20131 del
In T4 the player can choose to give speech and then is given the choice what should be in the speech, a hot topic, praise one faction (can be one superpower or himself) and give a promise to keep in the next term. Then from that the game selects the proper audio files and can listen the speech itself.
Then the election goes on and after the exit polls the numbers still can be corrected to reflect how the population really loves El Presidente. Elections also can be banned which will excite some pressure groups (first and foremost intellectuals, least the loyalists). I'm not sure foreign invasion in this case can happen. There's a democratic expectation from both the people and the foreign powers - I think - which grows as the time goes and with further elections but also influenced by the traits El Presidente has (e.g if the player chooses the background: "came to power by military coup" then the democratic expectations will lowered significantly, elections won't happen for a long time).

How malleable are the population's desires and pressure group choices?
They have their own demands which can be satisfied pretty easily by building some buildings (e.g loyalists always demand Childhood Museum, commies better tenements, conventillos) or issuing an edict or the other (e.g. religious ban contraceptives, environmental anti-litter ban) and then can keep the overall happiness levels fairly (40-50%) low without real hiccups for decades. The groups will keep molesting the player with more demands but can be ignored. Few people protesting is nothing, and an average rebel attack can be repelled easily, especially if El Presidente's background traits allow him to be more effective in fights - and even maybe give the soldiers bonuses.
Coups also can happen but I dunno nothing about this.

There's no economic policies, and no real market. The player builds stuff and transport the goods to the docks, freighter comes and pays for the whole shit whatever is there. Randomly the prices can change and certain maps in the campaign toy with this, and the player also can influence it on these maps buy reaching certain goals.

Bernd 10/17/2018 (Wed) 05:33:58 [Preview] No.20132 del
Oh, forgot. The respect change of a pressure group takes place instantly when one of their demands satisfied and all are expressed in numbers (the respect can move between 0 and 100).

Stellaris Megacorp DLC is out, together with new patch that completely changes planet administration, add space-faring civilizations, galactic market and some other things.
Got raided by space mongols on my first day, 10/10 would angrily restart my game again. I also been funding pirates to raid my rivals, literally bribing other civs to let me have branch offices on their planets so I can make even more money, funding space orks and some other slavers civs and then buying captured slaves from the market to work in my factories.
As for the galactic market it's not great for now other than that it allows you to buy some resources you can't produce. The price will go up or down depending on your selling or buying but it goes back to normal very fast. Maybe that will change later in the game, don't know.

Not entirely sure what you mean by random starts. If by that you mean having a galaxy map same way as other Paradox Games had, with certain nations owning certain territories at certain date etc., then there is no such thing but I also don't play mods.
The closest thing you can get in vanilla game is forcing some of your user-created civilizations to appear in the game.

Biggest gripe I have with this game is the clunky interface and controls. I doubt I can properly wage a war when I can barely control my units right.

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 20:49:02 [Preview] No.21976 del
Cannot trust those churkas.

Yeah. And with growin amount of cities and units it gets more and more difficult.
Maybe with native client and a server somewhere it could be better but that more effort, I dunno if it's worth it.

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 20:50:17 [Preview] No.21977 del

GUI is pretty bad, especially for me on small laptop screen and without mouse (I'm not at home now). Struggling with resizing diplomacy window and trying to manage everything in same turn is tiresome. Unit controls also pretty bad. Other problems include trying to find trireme that was sent to autoexplore 10 minutes ago, units that just stack and do nothing etc.

But overall it was fun.

I guess civ is pretty large game and not so good for large multiplayer - imagine war with 10 naval and 10 land units on both sides, it will be hell to manage. For singleplayer it is different experience, when you can slow down and think.

But I don't know any easy and fun alternatives to play.

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 20:53:24 [Preview] No.21978 del
>Maybe with native client and a server somewhere it could be better but that more effort, I dunno if it's worth it.

Finding server isn't that hard (I may find some VPS for this), and native client is definitely better, but overall course of game wouldn't change - it still may be difficult on late stages with all these units and management.

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 21:01:18 [Preview] No.21979 del
Can be played by mail. Player got notification if his turn is on. Maybe no time limit there. That would make the start tedious but ok the later stages, when lot to do with lots of units.

I'm back now, but I guess the game is over.

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 21:11:56 [Preview] No.21981 del

Main problem that this will be different game. Today we played "fast", with presence at PC (at least mostly), and playing by email is thing for weeks and months. I've seen how people played in Steel Panthers by email and this is very specific experience.

As far as I know, PBEM is mostly for wargame stuff, not Civ-like, but I'm not good in wargames so I couldn't name any game (except these Steel Panthers).

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 21:35:03 [Preview] No.21983 del
Yes, don't worry, we'll play at other times, tomorrow I can't and I'm not sure about Friday, I think the weekend is ok. But it also depends on others. Later the usual weekdays come, I guess in the evenings on a few days can play an hour or two.
Nevertheless we have some more insight on how to set up the game. But still experimenting, maybe with the map generation, some choices can be made there.

Panzer General can be played in mail.

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 21:37:12 [Preview] No.21986 del
Also Bernds can play it without me ofc. Just check settings what you guys want to set. Smaller map, easy AI (normal would have been too hard for us four), longer turns (two minutes/120 seconds at least, later turns need more time for management).

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 21:42:54 [Preview] No.21990 del
yes the unit management is hell already and we don't havem uch of them but I think it can be solved partially by playing on smaller maps

Bernd 01/02/2019 (Wed) 22:10:07 [Preview] No.21993 del
One frustrating point was the Advisor setting the cities production to buildings I didn't want to and had to be changed after every production ended. Needed to keep close watch to it or it would waste production.

Ok so few things I learned.

AI (at least on easy) seems to colonize aggressively. I think this is the reason they get so powerful in such quick time. For Anarchy, there's no penalties if you have up to 9 cities, above that you get more unhappy citizens everywhere. Other forms of government rise this limit (10 for despotism) so I think it might be a valid strategy to just shit out colonists until you reach your city limit.
AI was able to out-tech me easily. While I had pikemen, legions and catapults they already had bombards and musketeers.

You might have noticed (or not) that a tile that has 2 food output will not upgrade to 3 when you build irrigation. The reason for this is in despotism and anarchy every tile that has 3+ production of a single resource gets a penalty of -1. Grassland+irrigation should have 3 but it will drop to 2 again, grassland+wheat field+irrigation should have 4 but it will drop to 3. Every citizen needs to eat 2 food, additionally your city tile will produce on its own either 1 or 2 food. So a quick math reveals that you will never have food surplus greater then 2 unless you have built near wheat tile. For me personally in our games it was really hard to set up a city producing something else but food, cause sending one guy to those sweet gold mines would basically stagnate or starve the city.
However in all other gov types this penalty is not present so it seems focusing your research to get monarchy (I think its the fastest to get from gov types) is a valid strategy. After switching to monarchy/republic my population suddenly skyrocketed. Alternatively build cities only if you have access to wheat, or just accept that any other city will be shit until research is done.

One note about positioning your cities. I was told that you can send your workers up to 2 tiles away from the city, however that is not entirely true. I was all this time thinking that it would create a square area what I can work with, but actually you cannot send workers to the corners. I made a quick drawing to illustrate, green fields you can work on, black field is the city.

People in the city don't have to work on the tiles. If you take them off the fields they will become specialists symbolized by a dude on a blue background. If you click him he will turn into a different kind of specialists providing different bonus to the city (not sure about that but I think some require research).

Corruption eats away money produced in the city. It's greater the more distant the city is from the capital, so thats why AI built city so close to each other. Despotism gets most corruption, Anarchy actually gets less.

Bernd 01/05/2019 (Sat) 08:03:15 [Preview] No.22067 del
>Despotism gets most corruption, Anarchy actually gets less.
Yes, governments change several things, among them corruption. One other is the number of "free" units per city (units without upkeep). I think, I'm in a constant confusion with civ game rules, I played all but ofc in different times and different length.
>you cannot send workers to the corners
Yes, those aren't part of the city.
>People in the city don't have to work on the tiles...
Also if you have unhappy citizen, you can free one from work, make it happy and rebalance the happiness of the city.
>I think it might be a valid strategy to just shit out colonists until you reach your city limit
Except if you get attacked in the meantime.
Ideally if you make a new city, you should make a new settler to send it further as when the settler is ready, the town just grew by one so you can send settler. If the city population is one, you get a message you can't build the settler yet, even if it's finished.
But usually it isn't ideal, and you have to think about defences. First a soldier, because that's the only one that defends, even if you have walls that do nothing in itself. But then a veteran would be better so first build a barrack. But while you do it, your empire ain't growing...
>food output
I thought one needs to research some stuff like refrigeration to make Grassland yield 3 food with irrigation.
Early game it's more ideal to work on Plains tiles. It's 1/1/0. With irrigation it's 2/1/0 which is better than Grassland (where irrigation doesn't matter yet). Then build a road, you get 2/1/1. Ideally you want road on all the tiles a city has.
There are other resources giving more food, not just Wheat, but Pheasants or Fruits I think.
>for me personally in our games it was really hard to set up a city producing something else but food
I think in the beginning the capital will be the center of production and then the well placed cities will catch up.

Bernd 01/05/2019 (Sat) 15:54:38 [Preview] No.22072 del
>you cannot send workers to the corners. I made a quick drawing to illustrate, green fields you can work on, black field is the city.
right, but this illustration doesn't work as a general rule (it's not good enough to just remove the corners)
the proper area of a city is in fact an approximate quadrature of a disc centred on the city and the radius of that disc can be > 2
furthermore the chosen map perspective affects the calculation

I might join in sometime if I get a chance (my wörk hours can be a little difficult), but I'll probably have to learn how the fug to even play Civ first.
Back on 76chan we used to have a Quake 3 server but I don't know if we have enough regular users here for that. I also remember someone suggesting starting a Morrowind multiplayer server here before, but being an RPG it could be difficult as some people might want to play just for shits n' giggles while others might be into hardcore RP autism. Being an /int/ board there's also the inevitable issue of different timezones but I guess most of us are yuropoors on here so it isn't that bad.

Would you guys be interested in playing other titles? Because sooner or later openciv might get boring.
I have few propositions and I'd love to try them out with other Bernds

Battle for Wesnoth:
- already mentioned here and well received
- turn based strategy so no issue with lag or player tension that's present in real time gaems
- mostly focused on combat and area control
- absolutely free
- will run on anything
- plenty of mods to enhance gameplay
- ruthless AI + whimsical RNG combat will make games against computer opponents as hopeless as in openciv

Heroes III
- a fucking classic, i shouldn't eben be describing anything

Until it doesn't distract you from your duties as BO... (>>22418) ... we can talk about it. For now Freeciv feels fine for me, in past two days we had quite gripping matches.
Long time ago played Wesnoth briefly, it's basically liek Fantasy General, which is Panzer General.
Heroes III, could be worthwhile.

I pulled out Railroad Tycoon 2 again but can't even decide which map to play (I won't even bother with campaigns now), and when I pick one I spend liek half an hour just to size up the map, towns and possibilities of what cargo should go where. Then I fiddle with it, but I've other stuff to do.
Among flash games I suggest Hex Empire:
It's a turn based strategy with fairly short "matches". You can even make a challange out of it to win certain maps with less and less turns.
The player picks a nation from four, all starts from the corner. The objective is to conquer all the capitals. You get units automatically depending on the size of your territory. The three types of hexes: town, port, open field. All three give you a certain amount of soldiers, I think towns and ports two, open field 1. Units are generated only in towns. The capitals differ in this that they give more soldiers. Capture land by moving units. Units have two stats: troop number (size) and morale. Their sum gives the strength, during battles the stronger unit wins. Morale can go up and down with the situation, if you defeat enemy units, capture new towns and ports, morale goes up. If you lose, morale goes down. If you capture a capital that gives morale boost to your units to the maximum for each. Some events can change morale, you can figure this out.
Basically that's it.

Can't fully enjoy RT2 anymore. It takes an effort to just connect two points and watch the trains rolling while I sit back satisfied. Profit has to be made, money has to be spent, growth has to be reached exponentially.
So I have small working system, profitable, but then I have to connect Detroit and set up a passenger line between her and Chicago. But then I suddenly set up supply routes for Detroit, milk and produce. Then extend the line to Toronto and run passenger trains to Detroit and back. But London and Kitchener is just between them, so make stations there, then supply Detroit with iron, then send the goods to Chicago and haul food back. But London needs logs to make lumber which goes to Detroit and goods in return, so I extend the line again to a logging camp, but pulp wood also need to be transported from there so again I extend the line further to North Bay where I found a paper mill, but there's another logging camp on the way so pulp to North Bay and log to London, but paper needs to be transported somewhere so I send it to Toronto, then I get Iron for North Bay, producing goods and hauling it to Toronto which also supplies passengers in abundance so another line needed between her and North Bay, but the logging camps are far enough from London to run two trains each from them, but then London with produce hueg amount of Lumber so it needs to be sold somewhere, so I set up lumber hauling routes for already connected stations.
But then the sudden traffic results in sudden leap in growth and heug money that needs to be spent.
This under 5 minutes. I suffer as a Railroad Tycoon.

Maybe try out some classic platformers like Mega Man or Castlevania? they can be finished in around 40 minutes if you can git gud. Also maybe try emulating some Arcade games, they're usually pretty short and if you aren't that good at vidya it doesn't matter since you can use as many credits as you want in the emulator.

Seen your post about RT2 and decided to look at something similar, remembered that I always wanted to play OpenTTD properly (i.e this time with proper junctions and not quitting after 20 years).

Tried some downloadable scenarios, found this, named "Kingdom of Hungary". Never knew that Hungary rules the waves.

Also Fiume/Rijeka was mostly built up by Hungarian capital and -ists and was a Hungarian port.
Also Szarvas is the centre of the Carpathian basin.

>I have to confess: OpenTTD is way too assburgerish to me. How is it?

I don't think OpenTTD is more assburger than any other tycoon, it is pretty simple if you don't use specific autistic newgrfs (their name of pluggable content). It is literally a railroad building simulator, because other types of transport suck (except planes, but they are too simple). If you don't care, just build what you can and it be ok, although it is hard to create good looking and good working junction, mostly because game has unrealistic scale and related limitations (no semaphores on tiles with intersections etc). Although it is fun.

There are really autistic extensions like xUSSR trainset with 10 types of rails and complex rules (like combining trains into multiple units), but they are too complex.

So there's a new thing out called Kenshi and many memers on youtube seems to love it and I think Bernd will love it too.

It's something similar to Mount & Blade and Rimworld in post-apocalyptic world, but instead of using guns people were turned into massive weaboos and fight with katanas.
Even though you often start with only one dude, he's nothing special and all the other characters you meet and recruit have same kind of stats and skills.
Game is very brutal and you'll often find yourself being eaten alive by cannibals, sold into slavery or hunted by local authorities for things you didn't do. It's a game where attacking a peaceful herd of sheep with your starting character is asking for death.
Your characters don't gain levels or skill points that you later distribute to your skills, but instead he get's better at things he does. For example if you wan't your character to get tougher the best way is if you let him get beaten in fights.

Among other things you can do there's exploration, diplomacy with other factions, trading, trading illegal goods and probably most importantly building your own autistic fortress where your peasants produce your own drugs which then you smuggle to other cities and in the meantime get besieged by all kinds of bandits and monsters that lives in the area.
There's no end goal, similar to M&B, you do what you want to do and end when you had enough.

Unfortunately, despite having rather simple graphics game is rather demanding, and I couldn't play too much with my old computer.

>despite having rather simple graphics game is rather demanding
This is very infuriating for me. The games of the last decade are a mess, all these fuckers can't code shit, everything but the most simplistic games are laggy and slugish as fuck. Shitty engine, unoptimized scripting and textures. As I can tell. Like shitty Unity makes fugging Wasteland 2 such, also crash every corner. Fugging Shadowrun R, DF and HK, I liek these games so much but they are so sluggish sometimes I want to butcher the whole Harebrained Schemes studio.

also yeah you could try to find "libGLEW.so.1.10" in backports package from some 3rd party repo (tho this library isn't that popular most likely) or even build it yourself

also in most cases you can just symlink the library you have
$ ln -s /path/to/libGLEW.so.1.10 /path/to/libGLEW.so.1.13

(1.10 to 1.13)

its a hack but if you're lucky it works (esp. here the version is minor)

strange that should at least give you new error message when you run the game/bin file

also yeah i wasn't right here >>24515, you should in fact symlink 1.13 to 1.10 or even to something like libGLEW.so or libGLEW.so.0

its better to see how these symlinks work in console with ls -l /usr/lib/libGLEW*
then its clear, there should be (working) symlink from binary file to 1.10

Bernd 04/07/2019 (Sun) 19:10:00 [Preview] No.24522 del

Played EU3, 4, CK2, HoI2, Dankest Hour but couldn't into Victoria 2. Such cases.

I've some results.
Make said I missing bunch of shit, so I installed those two and then 1.10 was installed successfully. On the other hand the game still complained it couldn't find it. Then I looked the ldd output closer and all dependencies are in i386 libraries, so 1.10 should be also that but it isn't due my OS is 64bit.
You asked before, it's Mint 18 btw.
Where to place the symlink?
The 1.13 is in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu but the 1.10 was installed to /usr/lib64.
For an i386 the symlink could go into /usr/lib32 or /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu. Tomorrow will test it out.

Bernd 04/08/2019 (Mon) 20:27:23 [Preview] No.24597 del
ehh if the binary is 32bit it wont run without some multiarch tricks on 64bit linux

$ file game.bin
will show (if its say 32 bit elf then it wont work)

more info:

>The 1.13 is in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu but the 1.10 was installed to /usr/lib64.

dunno, on my system there's no difference between lib and lib64
but anyway if ldd shows this library as not missed its fine, if not then try some other directory
its also important to check these symlinks with "ls -l" output because they in fact can be broken and point to nothing (they will be red/broken in terminal then)

i don't know how this game is distributed/packaged but in theory it can have some needed libraries shipped with it in the game directory and maybe you have to run this game with some shell script/environment insted of binary/executable

maybe its stated in some readme file

another way to check this is to find some of these libs, for example:

$ find /path/to/game_dir -iname libGLEW.so.1.10

will try to find libGLEW.so.1.10 in the game dir.
if it present then they're probably shipped with the game and you need to tweak environment variables like PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH to run it with these libs or run it with some shell script (*.sh) from the game dir

The biggest issue is the mana points I think. There's 4 kind of them, you need to have them to effectively run your country and they come from arbitrary sources like your leader stats that you have absolute no control over.
The other issue was the super big fragmentation of factions. Basically in most areas 1 province=1 faction. Dude played as rome and once he conquered the italian peninsula there was no one around him to stop his expansion, he then said he doesnt have the patience to conquer all those 1 province big factions so he stopped playing.

At last I've bought new video card and decided to play Battletech. I've played in board wargame and board RPG (as I wrote in RPG thread before), so I couldn't miss that game.

Overall it is good, it is rare Battletech-styled game that somewhat sticks to classic rules, modified, of course, to make it more playable on computer. Some modern xcom-ish feel exists of course, but it is hard to make turn-based tactics game without new XCOM influence.

Works on l*nux pretty well.

I didn't play long, but yes, it is somewhat repetitive, so may look boring. It also has less action-feel than XCOM 2 (new), it feels slower, although visuals are ok.

>Memory: 8 GB RAM
>Graphics: Nvidia® GeForce™ GTX 560 Ti or AMD® ATI Radeon™ HD 5870 (1 GB VRAM)
That's a pass for me, despite turn based tactics would have fit well to me.

Bernd 05/02/2019 (Thu) 19:51:56 [Preview] No.25498 del

Mechcommander is, hmm, average, but not battletech-style enough. There were multiple BT games but only some of them were good. New Battletech game is something relatively close to stripped version of tabletop wargame (with hard limit for number of mechs and some balance issues). It is pretty playable I think.

For those who want real wargame experience there is free MegaMek, but it is just plain board game transferred into computer, no graphics, action or anything, and it is made for multiplayer. Can't recommend.

>That's a pass for me

Yes, thanks to Unity (tm) games now require such amount of resources, while having average graphics. I've tried to play with my radeon 6670, it worked but textures were pink because mesa linux drivers couldn't do opengl 4 on this. Now I have rx 580 and it is ok, but now I need new PSU.

Hey, remember this game? There's new shit.
As presented on the picture the north is now polluted with new human enemy faction - barbarians.

You can have a different start now, although I think that was added with previous DLC that I have missed. Those starts have different number of characters, traits, equipment, bonuses and weaknesses.
My first game was as cultist group. They're rather weak but one guy starts with a battle whip that has 3 range and shreds lightly armored enemies to shreds. It's shit against armour but you can disarm opponents on hit so it still useful. Description says the dark god we worship wants sacrifices from time to time and sometimes a cultist will join you for free, but on day ~60 only one dude showed up.
My current gameplay is lonewolf. Started with a level 4 guy with full armor and longsword but he's alone. Pretty funny since first enemies are dead on 1 hit, you just go through them like a lawnmower. They can eventually overwhelm you, but I just started hiring cheapest mercs (mostly beggars and cripples) as a meat shields and distraction. I'm on day 90 and main char kills are in hundreds I think. The weakness of this start is you can have only 12 men total and when your main char dies you lose the game.
Crafting is much easier now. Once you have all the ingredients you don't need to wait for an event, you can just go to a town with taxidermist and he'll do it for you.
New contracts, new monsters, new vikang and rus equipment etc. I think that covers it all. Go try it out and remember to enable ironman for maximum suffering.
website covers it more if you're interested http://battlebrothersgame.com

Arrite. Romance of the Three Kangdoms XI
So this is a turn based strategy based on the novels of the same name. Actually there's liek twenty games with this title, as far as I can tell all the same tho, KOEI just makes newer and fresher installments with little modifications. Most aren't available on PC, the III and XI however are.
Campaigns, scenarios, custom modes are available, maybe others too. You pick a faction which gives you some provinces, officers and you play at your best. The player can create his own officers he wants to use (or play against) too.
In the III the game had strategy and tactical levels, but XI plays both on one map. The map consists of provinces, every province has a city as a core and several slots for improvements. Improvements can be fields, mints, workshops, horsebreeders, shipyards etc. these give food, money and ability to produce equipment for troops and ships.
Officers are needed to govern cities and move troops and equipment. They are also do the work, keep the morale up, recruit soldiers, manufacture equipment, build stuff, recruit new officers, bring messages, research new tech, duel with other officers or debate them. And other stuff.
The basic equipment is sword for the soldiers, they can get horses, crossbows, pikes and spears. Also I think horses are either horse archers, or the leading officer needs some ability to use them as such, not sure. The equipment ensures some rock-paper-scissor based ability for the troops. Horse beats crossbows, crossbows beats spear, spear beats horses or something like this but with also pikes. Everything beats sword. Ofc the leading officer's stats also count and the number of soldiers.
So you improve your provinces, recruit troops, equip them, send them to battle and capture cities. That's about it.
Random events and diplomacy add more flavour, also officers have relationships, families and friends, maybe enemies. Some exceptional officers has magical abilities too, they can be loyalist, indifferent or hostile toward the emperor.

Wait, you never played Stellaris in your life, right? I don't recall you ever talking about playing it.

So anyway, see that Cybertronic caption at the "north"? That's where my starting system was. Initially I was happy about that starting position, only one way to enter my system with capital that I could fill with fortresses and generally make it pain to conquer. Unfortunately as soon as I left my system I encountered enemy ships and a chain event was initiated that spawned few more groups of relatively strong hostile ships. Of course since there was only one way going through multiple systems I had no way to go around it, so not only I had to spend extra resources to fight them, but also my expansion was severely postponed.

After I managed with that bullshit I encountered 2 aggressively expanding space empires. I had to rush with expansion to the south otherwise they would surely block me in that one shitty corner of galaxy, but I ended with this thin space between two of them, sort of like between the anvil and the hammer. And of course soon after that they made alliance and beat the shit out of me and took most juicy parts of my space. I tried to still play after this but even with some nice alliances I couldn't really fight back. At the end I was involved in 3 different wars and rest of galaxy was fighting it's own wars so price of alloys needed to construct ships skyrocketed (my own industry was shit).

I ragequited but the good news is that they did really improve the AI, because I could play on this difficulty before patch without much effort.

Went for another Darkest Hour 1936 Uncle Joe run as the last one didn't proceed well. I spammed industry until 1939, building around 50 new units of glorious Soviet power and then focused on upgrades and spamming infantry. I expected a defensive game, building no aircraft, ships or new armored/motorized divisions at all -though all my cavalry was upgraded into a reasonable mechanized force- and, as you can see, prepared to anchor my defense on the Dniepr. This went off course in 1939, when a rapid motorized spearhead allowed me to annex all of Finland in the Winter War and I invaded all of Romania instead of just demanding Bessarabia. The latter was done just to thin out Axis numbers in the coming invasion, but I soon realized it gave me a prime position to overrun the Balkans and that my army had been fully upgraded to Infantry 1936/1939 and expanded so much I was running out of peacetime manpower. Another deviation was Germany invading Spain and securing Gibraltar.

On my first run Hitler invaded as early as May. This time all of July rolled around and he still didn't attack. No problem, I massed at the border and declared war myself in early August. The Balkans were easily overrun, there were no garrisons at all in Croatia & Serbia and Bulgaria became my puppet state after losing a few battles. My spearheads took Vienna defended only by a single Fallschirmjager division and then foolishly got 2 motor rifle divisions encircled because they advanced too far into Bavaria. But reinforcements began to flow in. Another couple of motor rifle divisions entered Italy and nearly took Venice, but Blackshirts held it long enough for the 'Ravenna' infantry division to arrive and hold the tide.

In Germany itself my focus was on large encirclement battles, but German qualitative advantage and my lack of mobile divisions hindered any immediate battle of annihilation. Some 19 divisions were encircled in central Poland but a thrust to isolate East Prussia was cut off from its communication lines and stopped dead in its tracks. I had to bring in huge numbers of rifle divisions to reestablish them and in the end did encircle some Germans in Konigsberg. My advance over Poland was WWI style with huge, grinding mass infantry assaults to repeatedly take over the same small strips of land the Germans kept reinforcing. My losses were always bigger than the enemy's. But I gradually made encirclement after encirclement and thus maximized my numerical superiority. Berlin was taken before the end of the year with zero resistance.

From the Balkans I was fighting in Austria, Bohemia and Italy. Germany reinforced its frontline and made local gains but I redeployed forces from Poland and kept pressing on, another great encirclement was made somewhere in eastern Czechia. In Italy Bulgarian and Soviet reinforcements piled up and effortlessly smashed through the handful of divisions Mussolini had. After I took over all of northern Italy they surrendered and the territory went over to Germany. A single Bulgarian cavalry division had to take months to mop up undefended "German" southern Italy while the remaining forces attacked through southern France. Waiting for reinforcements to arrive and reorganize took time and in the meantime Germany put up some fights in the Rhone and the Alps, but soon Zhukov was driving his tanks unopposed up to Paris.

1942 was just mopping up. The last battleworthy German stacks were annihilated at great cost in Bremen and Denmark. The Allies landed in Amsterdam and Corsica. Some German divisions were contained in the Low Counties, while Spain was taken over with only static garrisons putting up an obstacle. Copenhagen took time to take as somehow all of Italy's ships had magically made their way there and a stack of 90 Axis vessels prevented my advance over the strait. But only a single understrength infantry division was on the ground; Soviet and Allied bombing reduced it to little over a thousand men and my lone paratrooper division took care of it.

Norway was the last Axis bastion. I advanced from the frigid north to as far as Trondheim at massive casualties, and the British landed in the south. When I took Trondheim on the 12th of May I finally annexed Germany. Nearly all of Western Europe is red and my army is huge.

I'm now thinking of the long term. Even in 1941 I was already shifting research priorities to the navy, and now I'm also on the nuclear research path. But it'll take at least until 1945 to have a proper fleet; I even have 3 aircraft carriers (1922 tech) set to finish by late 1943. I already have some 9 transport flotillas awaiting in the deployment roster, they'll probably go to the Far East. In the meantime I'm building naval bombers and will order some transport planes and paratroopers.
My first objective is Japan. The land campaign should be easy but taking over the Isles is a puzzle. I guess I'll land some paratroopers in a port and then rush it with transports, as a regular naval invasion is out of the question.

Once Japan is done I'll liberate British workers and peasants in 1945. The game goes as far as the early 60s so my ultimate goal is invading the American continent and ultimately achieving world domination. And I'll drop a lot of nukes when they're ready.
