I'm gonna red-white-greenpill you on Hungarian football.
It isn't a secret that the football of our country in our days is pretty weak but this wasn't always the case so I thought a glimpse in this could be interesting. It won't be only about the past, but I try to introduce the present as well. Some parts will be kinda memey and not too precise I think.
I have some material gathered for this already, I'll try and create new posts in timely fashion. I don't plan it to be too long tho coz I'll never finish it.

This also can be a thread dedicated for sports or kinda /fit/ as we have people who do that kind of activites, and it can be one for outdoors too ofc.

Our teams did perform well only two times on World Cups they were better on Olympics which has lower prestige sadly. Anyway we got some nice shiny medals in all metals long after '54.

The seed of the sport was planted in the late 19th century, they called it "kicker" (rugdaló), "kickball" or "English kickball" at first, then used the English football expression, then Magyarized to futball but also used the term "ballkicking" (labdarúgás) in parallel and both remained up to this date. It's nickname is foci (pronounced something like fozi and not foki).
In the beginning it was all but one sport of many practiced by athletic clubs with mostly members of noble birth, and the footballers excelled and competed in other sports like swimming, boxing or fencing. It wasn't a spectator sport either. The first "training match" was played about two decades after the arrival of football, in 1897, by two teams of the Budapesti Torna Club (BTC), the blues beat the reds by 5-0 in front of an audience of one hundred people. The same teams performed an exhibition game in a small town few months later, then in October the first international match was played by the BTC against the Cricketers, i.e. the Vieanna Cricket and Football Club. Englishmen were very influential and essential in the football world of Austria-Hungary: the BTC sported two gentlemen from the UK, while the Cricketers had 7 or 9(!) such players. The BTC was defeated: 0-2 was the result.
Many amateur clubs formed quickly. By 1901 these clubs were all over the country but only the capital had real football, in that year members of 13 clubs - all from Budapest - formed the Magyar Labdarúgó Szövetség (MLSZ = Hungarian Football Federation) and organized the first football tournament ever in the country. They created two leagues, English style: the 1st and 2nd Divisions with 5 and 8 teams. They divided the clubs by their previous results played with other Hungarian and foreign opponents. The two last of the 1st Division could be relegated to the 2nd and the two first of the 2nd Division had the opportunity to rise into the 1st. The clubs played two games with every other club (home and away), they got 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
A new age started.

First pic is the team of Budapest Torna Club (BTC), the second is the Cricketers.
The dude with the many medals is Hajós Alfréd, a player of BTC, later referee, international as well, coach of the national football team in 1906. During the 1896 Summer Olympics (the first modern Olympics) he won the 100 and 1200 m freestyle swimming contests.

By this time athletics weren't only the nobles' past time. The new clubs were founded by all kinds of people, public servants, factory workers, university students etc. One of the earliest clubs which featured football in it's profile was created by... Jews.
It was the Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre (MTK) and supposedly it had to be founded because antisemitism, they were cast out from every club they wanted into. At least this is the official narrative. I don't think this is true. While back then everyone was antisemite more or less this happened after Jewish emancipation so they could do whatever they liked and there were Jews in other clubs, great example the aforementioned Hajós. And it seems these clubs weren't founded just by groups of acquaintances as it wasn't unique that they shared similar ethnic background (for example, the Ferencvárosi Torna Club - FTC - was created by Germans/Swabians) so I believe that group of particular Jews simply just did the same.
Nevertheless MTK became one of the three top clubs (other two: FTC and ÚTE) few years after the league formed, and otherwise Jews played a great role in Hungarian football and sports in general. The club's chairman (from 1905), Brüll Alfréd was especially into these stuff.
He was an industrialist with passion for sports. Football, swimming, athletics, wrestling (not the gay theatrical show, but the other gay real one), sailing, he poured much money into them and with the money official titles came with their power. Supposedly he owned the first automobile in the country and he was one of those who created the Hungarian auto-motorsport as well. He was the chairman of MTK and owner of the club. He built their arena from his own money and payed much "pocket-money" for the players and helped them getting jobs. But he (supposedly) was also the chairman of 26 other athletic clubs (not sure how many had football teams among these). At that time he couldn't have been if he didn't finance them as well. One year when the league was reorganized and there was no official season, he initiated the "Brüll Cup" round-robin tournament.

Noteworthy:
There were other Jewish teams in Europe. In Austria-Hungary there were Hakoah Vienna, Makkabi Brünn and the Hungarian Vívó és Atlétikai Club (VAC, today: Maccabi VAC) for example.

I'm going to share some news from polish football.
There was a match in Poznań today where I live. Two teams: Lech Poznań and Legia Warszawa were playing against each other and I tell you fans hate each other more than anything else. Fans of Legia here are usually escorted by police from the train station to the stadium for their security.
Legia scored 2:0 and before end of the match Lech fans went mad, started throwing flares and basically went full bydlo.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=DTmSGqVhk_4 [Embed]
Match was stopped and Lech was punished with walkover, which results in the hated team winning over the host and getting title of polish champion on the host own stadium.
Thankfully I live in a rural area, distant from the stadium, but I expect tomorrow I'll be witnessing results of riots when I go to the city.

Haha! Good times!
They have quite a good voice. This always makes me wonder how impressive had to be the battle-cries of medieval armies. And how terrifying if some had planned and coordinated shouts in unusual voices.

FTC vs UTE derby from 1999. These two teams - I mentioned here: >>16580 - have the second oldest rivalry in Europe. Their derbies are always very intense.

But I didn't write about Brüll because he was Jewish but because his name comes up at every corner as he is a model example how the financing worked in that era. I previously mentioned these were amateur players and not professionals. They had day-jobs and played football as a hobby, out of love and not as a profession.
In theory.
In reality they earned three or four times as much as an average worker earned, simply it wasn't official wage but "pocket-money" as I mentioned before or other type of aid like "bath/spa allowance" and such. Beside that their day-jobs were alibi jobs on many occasion, of course they sometimes had to do real work (most likely like the players in team of the Postal service). Some players had their own enterprises, one of them (or they were two brothers? I can't remember) had a sport equipment and clothing shop, not surprisingly he supplied the whole league with their stuff, ensuring them very stable financial circumstances.
When they weren't in the employment of the company their club was financed and created by (like the Royal Post or the State Railroad) then they got their jobs from fans and enthusiasts (like Brüll).
It was a hotly discussed topics up until the second half of the '20s if they should go full pro or remain as amateurs. Many players explressed the opinion that if they got less as professionals than as amateurs then they would rather remain as amateurs. Why would they got less? Well they got their share from the ticket sales, then some more from the patrons of the team and the wage of their day-jobs, as pros they wouldn't have access to the latter and most teams weren't in the situation to be able to compensate that loss.
Despite the money they pocketed the players were barely content and they left the country for western teams and larger pay by the dozen. Many of them had to return from Italy for example after the Carta di Viareggio was introduced in the August of 1926 which maximized the number of foreign players in Italian teams by one person (well, one person on the field; in 1925-26 55 Hungarians played for Italian clubs, 19 of them earned a place in our national team). Or the Makkabi Brünn sported as many Hungarian players at one time as the Criceters Englishmen back then. Players leaving also were a huge problem for the league, bigger names attracted audience in bigger numbers, this was also thoroughly discussed in contemporary newspapers.
Of course there were people and teams who criticized the system of the pseudo-amateurism and stood by pure amateurism (play football l'art pour l'art and not for a wage or "pocket-money"), but from what I read it sounds like it was a lost cause.

Noteworthy:
While my main source material is a five volume book titled A magyar labdarúgás története (The History of Hungarian Football) - 500-800 pages per volumes - I check sites as well in case of certain sidetracks, among them Wikipedia. The English Wiki (unlike Hungarian) states the following in the article about Guttmann Béla, one great player (four times selected in the national team):
>In 1922 he moved to Vienna to escape the anti-semitism of the Admiral Horthy regime and joined the all-Jewish club SC Hakoah Wien.
It's a great nonsense ofc he went there for more money... just the same as many others.

What about international appearances?
Our clubs and national eleven fairly were busy playing international matches and the viewers/fans were enthusiastic about those. For example in 1913 30 thousand spectators were curious of the game against the Austrians. But not just teams from the Empire were contenders since 1907 the MLSZ is a member of FIFA which helped arranging matches with other members however our clubs - being amateurs - couldn't compete in professional tournaments.
Olympics features football since 1908. In the next one in Stockholm our team had the honor first time to be beaten badly (from Great Britain, it was an expected result).
Btw. During the Great War football matches - in general - remained popular 1200 spectators were considered a low number.
After the War international contests were hard to arrange as the Entente burned in the craze of punishment and tried to prohibit the teams of the beaten countries from the competitions. No Olympics for us in 1920.

These beginning decades already reflected two characteristics of Hungarian football: sparse availability of funding and the division between the clubs of the capital and the country. Both showed up as a problem in '26 when they decided about going pro during that summer. The decision makers' (those who considered themselves as such) declaration caused a small scandal as into the new 1st Division they planned to include 8 pro clubs, all from Budapest. This wasn't acceptable for a few teams in the country as they surpassed most of these 8 in wealth and player pool. Frankly only two teams (the FTC and MTK) had any real financial power. Nevertheless 30(!) clubs applied to be professional which were more than enough to fill two divisions but there were some front-rank teams who didn't (or couldn't) become pros, some from Budapest as well. In the end they created a professional league with 10 clubs (8 from BP, 2 from the country) and an amateur 1st Division divided into two groups (the two champions of the groups played finals for the title of state champion).
This of course made available participating in professional international tournaments.

#1 pic: the colors of the 10 pro clubs
#2 pic: the CoA of one of the teams which couldn't into professionalism as the players were uni students

Noteworthy:
The pro clubs had to choose new names, they just modified the original. However the "mother clubs" didn't cease to exist, they continued as amateurs because these originals weren't just football teams but whole athletic organizations with football sections and the new pro teams specialized in football only. The names reflect this. E.g. From the Ferencvárosi Torna Club became Ferencváros Football Club.

Well. Here it is, a collection of colorful potatos of the World Cup's national teams. It was more work than I expected. They would play great many matches so from this experience I would say drawing all them would be far too ambitious for me.

Here's my preferences:
Generally some South American team has my sympathy, Paraguay (because of Chilavert), Uruguay and Argentina (I can't remember why). Also Italy because when I was a kid about 10 we bet on football pools of the Serie A with my Granma. I also sympathize with Croatia - simply for historical reasons, them being a country of the Hungarian Holy Crown - and Iceland, the UEFA Championship of 2016 made them likeable. But no Paraguay or Italy this year.
So here it goes:
A. Uruguay
B. Iran - for the fun of it
C. Peru - I have no preference, so I would choose a South American to support
D. this one I dunno, I would support even Nigeria just for the fun of it
E. dunno, no preference
F. Mexico, no real preference
G. Panama, no real preference
H. Poland, no question about it

I'm not sure who is the most probable winner. Germany is traditionally strong, the home team also usually expected to play well, and Russia isn't bad. France, Spain, Portugal, England are all strong. Previously Brasil was an ace until that 7:1, and Argentina usually has a good team.
Ofc I don't know any of these recent performance.
Yeah Poland's flag is white-red but the ball is red-white. Other red-whites are drawn with accessories to make them distinct, like Monaco with shades and Indonesia with straw hat.

Bernd 06/05/2018 (Tue) 20:04:51 [Preview] No.16978 del
It's time to speed up things.
But first I think I'm a little confused how the different international tournaments are called in English and their history, when they begin.
The first Olympics that featured football is the 1908 Stockholm Summer Olympics.
The first FIFA World Cup tournament was held in 1930.
The first UEFA European Championship was held in 1960 but it was called European Nations' Cup.
But this wasn't the first international tournament of Europe in regards to Hungary. There was a Central European Ornament with Austria, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Hungary prior to 1927, and another European Tournament with Italy and Switzerland but without the Yugos after that year (in the last one however during 1954-1960 however they participated as well). This is professional level, among the amateur teams the national eleven of Poland and Romania can be found too. The official name was Central European International Cup.

But let me interject for a moment. In 1927 Austria defeated our national team for 0-6 at Budapest in front of about 40 thousand spectators. One of our nationally recognized writer (we learn about him in school) who wasn't much fan of football itself also visited the match and put onto paper his impressions. He also noted the parallels between armies and the supporting crowd and said: even the greatest princes of Transylvania (during the Ottoman times) weren't capable to gather that many soldiers this match attracted.

Pic #2 and #3 is the stadium where the final of the first World Cup was held, in 1930, Uruguay.

Meanwhile, there are championship in Russia. Some reports in media say that factories near participating cities have problems with raw materials because of police/FSB orders (to prevent any problems). People who have guns say that they see increased interest of police. Some homeowners in Ekaterinburg even saw notice that gas will be off in championship time (so no hot water to them). Government bots denounce this as fake news and local crazyness, official media are silent.

Some MGU students wrote anti-championship message over some unrelevant sign and face charges. They protested against fanzone near university and against enforced restrictions.

Moscow is prepared for large amount of fans, metro already have voice messages in English (with light British accent I guess), new LCD info screens etc.

A World Cup is a very big event, at least for us it would be and us Hungarians are kinda divided by it, just like with Olympics and any other sport event and this division has mostly roots. There are those who are enthusiastic about it mainly sport fans and the government and governing parties (now Fidesz for a while now) who try to ride the horse of popularity and there is the opposition who oppose the govt. and don't care if they trample the hopes and dreams of sport fans they just want to tell the contrary what the govt tells with all kinds of rationalizations ofc. This could worth a longer post.
There are people who don't care and in large number but it's nowhere to apathy. I'm surprised I would think Russians are more passionate.
And it feels typical to Russia this event is used for bullying people. Old school and soviet.

The '30's was the first real blooming of the Hungarian football. They weren't bad before but the international recognition is quite real in this decade.
The strongest league of the '30s seems to be the Italian. They used very few legionaries - mostly from South America and a few from Hungary - they put great emphasis on their home grown talents, for this their national selection become extremely strong and they brought the results: in '30 and '35 they won the European Cup, in '36 the Olympics, and in '34 and '38 the World Cup. If there was something to win, they won it. But in a club aren't just the players important but the staff. In 1930 from the 18 teams' (of Serie A) 22 coaches 7 were Italian and 7 Hungarian (5 Austrian, 2 English and 1 Scott). In the next season the number of Hungarian coaches were 10! With the Austrians they introduced the "Danube school" in the Italian football. During those years Hungarians coached teams like Real Madrid, Bayern München, Basel, Grasshoppers, Panathinaikos, Besiktas and Galatasaray.
There were players as well at such notable teams like Juventus or Barcelona. In the US 17 players kicked the ball along with Guttmann I wrote above.
For the year of 1932 we have three list sport journalist compiled of the top nations.
The English Ivan Sharpe's ranking of the continental European teams:
1. Austria
2. Hungary
3. Italy
4. Czechoslovakia
5. Germany
6. Spain
7. France
Despite his name the French Pfefferkorn gives this list, Europe and the British isles:
1. Scotland
2. England
3. Austria
4. Italy
5. Czechoslovakia
6. Hungary
7. Spain
8. Germany
9. Romania
10. Yugoslavia
The French newspaper's, the Sporting's list includes South America as well:
1. Scotland
2. England
3. Uruguay
4. Brasil
5. Argentina
6. Austria
7. Italy
8. Hungary
9. Czechoslovakia
10. Spain
Very interesting. And results also came: our national eleven managed to reach the second place during the World Cup of 1938. A defeat (4-2) from that Italian team isn't too much of a shame.

And again came the war which paused international competitions (there were matches here and there ofc, on club level also but minimal amount). Indeed in 1938 September the team of our national selection had to turn back from Czechoslovakia due to "tense international situation" and in 1940 the European Cup final was cancelled (also from the founding members Austria and Czechoslovakia didn't exist that time). Up to 1943 - as the fighting ceased in Europe - the numbers of international matches grew somewhat then it started become difficult to play even the regular national league matches. Air raids, flattened stadiums and national-soldier-selections became regular. Then as the front reached our country and slowly moved to west less and less clubs could participate in the tournaments and soon the I. League consisted only of teams from Budapest but the matches followed each other irregularly. The great derby between the FTC and the ÚTE was postponed again and again in December of 1944, then on the 25th the capital was surrounded by the Red Army and there were no return from the front to resolve that match.
I mentioned before that Jews were important part of Hungarian football, both as players and coaches, staff. Some ofc was deported to Auschwitz where some played in the lager-team, I don't think there's exact number, interesting tidbit, one of them became the manager of Internazionale later on the name of Desiderio Solti (originally: Steinberger Dezső). But for example the aforementioned Brüll Alfréd was killed - not sure where - maybe at Kecskemét (a town in Hungary) or in Auschwitz.

This went faster.
I checked and it's really unorthodox to draw more than one ball from a nation into one picture, but I really wanted to get the feeling of the second half back.
There are other ways to portray the wall of defence so maybe I'll change this. But for now it's okay.

Looking back to the match I'm not sure if the Icelanders were pressed in by the Argies or they just gave up attacking by choice as they knew they can't dribble/pass/play the Argies out but with their strength they can "back" the game through.

I think it's a trend on this WC that underdog teams harden their defense on a draw, they couldn't score much anyway. They got lucky with a penalty or something then pull out the wall. Still in set pieces they can be beaten.

People here are pretty proud about Russian team now. Although I don't get it, Egypt and Saudis aren't really good teams. I guess Uruguay game will be much more serious.

I've seen more and more fans in metro, they are mostly have some badges but not very visible. Few days ago I've gone from work in train with local fans, oh they are loud. One of my coworker suffers because he lives near stadium and can't drive anywhere at day when match happens.

Media quickly became silent about that driving incident, when Kyrgyz taxi driver hit Mexicans and tried to run away. Official position is "he was just tired and sleepy", but it looks like deliberate action: move is too quick and he was fast. But having a terror act is a no-no for championship, so it is accident.

Meanwhile, government uses good news while they last: laws are prepared about raising pension age (that didn't happen from Soviet times, serious issue) and about raising value-added tax from 18 to 20%.

This match Iceland couldn't use their height and strength to her own advantage as Nigerian players are tall and strong as well.

How's the Groups stand? Try to keep this quick.
A: Russia and Uruguay will advance no matter what will be the result of the next to matches.
B: Morocco is eliminated, Spain has a sure spot. Unlikely if but Iran win against Portugal they'll exchange places and Iran will move forward.
C: France qualified, Peru is eliminated. Denmark needs at least a draw against France to secure her place otherwise it will be uncomfortable if Australia defeats Peru.
D: Croatia is doing fine, Iceland is gonna have a difficult match against them and they have to win to have some hope. On Argentina-Nigeria anything can happen. If Argies win and Iceland wins then goals and points and pointing goals and whatever will decide. Tl;dr Iceland have to beat Croatia badly just to make sure. Fat chance.
E: Costa Rica waves good bye. The other teams... anything could happen. The most interesting situation would be if Brazil ties with Serbia and Switzerland beats Costa Rica. Then they'll have 4 points each. Then calculate.
F: Germany can and have to get those three points against Hanguk if she wants to advance. But if Mexico-Sweden is a draw then she's out of luck.
G: Same situation. Panama or Tunisia still get in with a win but only if England or Belgium wins. Of course calculation still can deny the advancement from them.
H: This is a little bit different. Japan (vs.Poland) and Senegal (vs. Colombia) will advance even with a tie. But even if Poland and/or Colombia wins they cannot be sure it will be enough they need to score a lot. This will be interesting.

Also new schedule.

RT isn't targeted to Russian, it is pretty hard to find anyone who watch or read Russian edition here. So, they inventing something for westerners. I've seen this meme in local internet but it isn't too popular to became news story.

Most of westerners know nothing about Russia, so concept of "weird things from exotic place" works.

Tomorrow two potentially great match.
Frankly not many surprises in this tournament beside Germany's failure. From the 16 teams that had the most potential to win this 14 advanced and Japan is just right behind the first 16 in chance - judging by the odds I posted well above.
Now Brazil and France seems to be the most probable winner but from what I saw not sure. Croatia and Uruguay has clean sheets but the opponents of the Croats were more formidable (among them Argentina).
I'm pretty sure Spain will beat Russia, and most likely Croatia will beat Denmark but I wouldn't bet on the other games.

Mexico had the initiative for the first twenty minutes, but we turned the tables until the 43rd minute. After a final Mexican offensive in the first round, nobody had scored yet.

Neymar then scored and, after failing a few attacks, we went into the defensive, but Mexico still couldn't dominate the field. Philippe Coutinho, who had a shining performance on the first three matches but not much now, was replaced on the last minutes by Firmino, who then scored another one.

Neymar's performance is improving, but he still throws a hissy fit whenever someone else bumps into him -and it certainly doesn't help that enemy players behave agressively against him. Midfielder Willian was the one who got praised this time.

>They didn't defend particularly well against the Brazilian attacks in that quarter hour, Brazil just sucked at finishing them.

That was a combination of chronic issues in our ability to finish (bad aim and poorly coordinated crosses) and the general melting away of discipline as the minutes passed and despair set in.
Neymar had one last shot less than two minutes before the end and botched it. Looks like he, who just a few years ago was praised as some sort of second Pelé, will never get to touch the Trophy in his life.

Maybe they aren't stable mentally how they should be, they are more emotional and don't deal well when stressed. On the other hand they play X dozen matches per year with their clubs there should be some difficult situation sometimes.
I think Neymar is a very good player. I've no idea his performance in general I can only rely on the world cup, what I saw but I would judge so. On every matches he had to deal with the intense attention of the opposing defense, it wasn't rare they put three players on him. Still he did good mostly. He also made a pass I didn't see such by anyone else so far (granted usually I'm drawing during matches so my focus is elsewhere). There were two dudes between him and the player he wanted to pass in such way they covered his target, still he gave such a curved ball between them that the ball arrived exactly to the leg of his mate. It was like poetry. He has great technique.

Belgian defense is liek the Swiss cheese. At least there are many attacks but from the Belgians less and less as Frenchies get their shit together. Not a bad game but football is played for goals.

France is dangerous like a cobra. They defend very reliably and bite back fast. However this wasn't enough, they scored from a set piece.

I don't like this WC. It is not good football. It does not even seem football. So little dynamism and verticality, barely any combination and triangulation play. What's a first-touch pass? Where are the playmakers? Most games are the same game. Defensiveness and tightness rule, miserly and risk-aversion for all. Everyone defending in block (or rather "fence"), all men behind the ball line, but not pressuring, just letting them crash into the cluttered goal area. Meh, this is more like handball.

t. actually grew up playing and watching football (lots of years ago) though I don't anymore

Kinda agree. Mostly the less "talented" teams who have less chance to win use that tactic as it is very effective so there were some nice moments but mostly those from counterattacks when they could outpace the defense so it couldn't form up. Not counting this I think Japan's matches were good and Croatia's up until the knockout stage, and France's maybe (except with the Danes).

Haha, Belgium has the lead by one and just happened a great save, not by Cursois but by a outfielder just by the goal. England still has 20 minutes to equalize. Maybe I can watch this, I have stuff to do tho I want to make a cord by stinging nettle because I plan to make tongs/clamps/whatever out of wood for cooking/frying outside and would be cool to tie it with self made cordage.

Hungarian commentator said the strength of the French team was their adaptability. They could always do something to put some plus over the opponent. When their attackers played weak they could rely on their defense, when their goalie failed they could score more etc.
This match I agree they didn't play well. Not as well as they could.
Croats' mind was resolute and as they have old players they have much routine. Old foxes good players and team overall.
