Facebook/Google block abortion referendum ads Bernd 05/12/2018 (Sat) 15:43:07 [Preview] No. 16457
>Ahead of Ireland’s upcoming referendum, which will decide whether or not the country’s eighth amendment preventing abortion in the country will be revoked, Silicon Valley’s masters of the universe have chosen to ban advertisements relating to the referendum.
>Facebook and Google both announced separately that they would be banning the advertisement of ads relating to the referendum.
>Irish Times political reporter Pat Leahy discussed the move by the tech companies, stating that for many pro-abortion campaigners on the left, this was good news.

Free market will fix it. The people will recognize their tyranny and will choose their competition.
Oh wait.

Although I don't like comparing imageboards to irl 8chan was a good example of this. Nobody wanted to make new boards even when their moderation went to shit because people were too attached to the legacy names.

Also they don't really have competition.

Well, Google has, other search engines exist (and e-mail services, map etc.) but not one has such sophisticated one.

I would say Facebook has competition since most normies these days are using twitter and instagram as far as I know. As for Google most of its services have good alternatives but I've yet to find a good Youtube replacement.

Instagram is Facebook. Or rather another service of them.
Twitter can be hardly an equivalent of FB, and most (at least 99,9% of them) of those who use Twitter have FB also, they aren't mutually exclusive. As the video I posted above show, not one other company gives the same to the consumers.

>Instagram is Facebook. Or rather another service of them.
Really? Guess I don't know much about the normienet.
Though even if there was an alternative it's unlikely anyone would take any interest. Take for example that FOSS twitter clone Stallman was shilling before.

gnu social? seems primarily used by current or perhaps former image board users to share pictures of anime females wearing varying amounts of clothing. not that there's anything wrong with that but anytime I've looked into instances that's what it's been.

All discussion about FB or other big social sites isn't about software, but about people. There is already plenty of software that can be used. Masses wouldn't go anywhere without very serious marketing campaign, and even with it this could fail (like with google+).

People tend to sit where others do. People don't want to leave facebook because all friends and relatives are there (even when almost every user complains about evilness of fb). Small amount of fanatical users who move to GNU/wtf or diaspora or whatever couldn't do anything because they aren't relevant.

That is why facebook may be killed only by other facebook-like global thing, not by bunch of small independent sites. For example, instagram had luck and grown from photo-sharing shit to real social network, but started to be big (and evil of course) in process. It is very serious amount of money, and when you spend that you'll already at level when you have thousands of parasite-managers, diversitee consultants, government requests and other shit.

Even creating federation of small servers doesn't work, because people tend to go to the biggest and stable, so it will be "everyone on one server and bunch of fanatics on self-owned". Like situation with XMPP in Russia, when everyone sit on jabber.ru because other server are personal or just die in few months.

>People tend to sit where others do.
This true. Peer pressure is high. They need to be there because others in their social circles are there.

I think that's the one, last I checked it was only used by /g/ autists so your description is probably pretty accurate.

Similar problem to Youtube which I mentioned earlier. There are many alternatives that work well but don't have the range of videos Youtube has. Also I doubt anyone other than big companies can even afford the amount of server space it takes to run a site like Youtube.

Bernd 05/16/2018 (Wed) 16:17:54 [Preview] No.16526 del
Thematic sites could be made. So one group of people could make a video sharing site for cute animal videos, other group could make vlog site, third could make one for documentaries etc etc. Then a group could make a desktop/phone application or a collection site to them so one wouldn't need to check over 1488 sites but only one.

Yes, this is a big concern. Common people seriously underestimate costs of traffic and storage on that services. And there is no real way to monetize such things easily.

For example, image hosting with direct links to images (that is very good for user) isn't profitable at all, because almost no one would go to watch ads. There was situation with postimages.org where cloudflare asked $12k for 1.8 petabytes of traffic: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12825719

Video hosting will be much more expensive. Payed accounts are ok, but if you want popularity, you need to have usable free tier, so prices will go up. And big service also need full-time moderators because otherwise child porn will ruin it in few days. And maybe ruin your life too: https://fuwafuwa.moe/nr/freeme/

Could work but I think most people are too accustomed to the centralised internet of the current year to make it happen. Similar to how most small forums and imageboards are dead and replaced by subreddits, 4chan generals etc even when programs like Overchan exist.

Didn't this guy have a disclaimer for user-uploaded content like 4chan? I guess the hentai and onaholes didn't help his case though.

>Russian agents acting on personal orders of President Vladimir Putin’s pet bear used Facebook to hack American democracy
This really was a discussion during the hearing of Zuckerberg, how Facebook helped Trump vastly. What I don't understand: so Trump was elected legally or it was a fraud? They really should decide. Also what's up with Obongo? Facebook helped him the same way. Or rather Facebook was used back then the same.

Legally. They tried to push this, but looks like only data about informational interference can be found. I'm not a specialist about laws of US of A, but I guess there is nothing about fraudness of information campaigns there, only about voter fraud etc. So he was elected legally.

>They really should decide.

Why? Having uncertainty is the best thing for propaganda. It is good even for Trump, because it allows him to play a victim, and his supporters got fuel for heated discussions in internet. Meanwhile, he can simultaneously support Saudis and military complex, and be "right-wing" and anti-neoliberal in same time, and no one cares.

>Also what's up with Obongo? Facebook helped him the same way. Or rather Facebook was used back then the same.

That is rhetorical question and everyone know the answer. Obongo was "good", so it is free media who openly support good guy, Facebook did nothing wrong here. Trump is bad, also racist and horribly white, and this is no-no in modern USA, so Facebook is bad. But it isn't so bad to stop using it of course. Trying to find this description in media is meaningless of course.

When the American empire "modern America" collapses I will at least be glad about one thing: a lot of morons who have refused to prepare will end up killing each other off. I only hope we can piece back together our constitutional society and make sure this all this bullshit never happens again - this bullshit includes the central bank, wars for ZOG, political lobbying, career politics, mass interventionism, political correctness, etc.

I'm sure this is the reason they want to take our guns away from us. Fuck them, they ain't taking em.
