Last Exile is very good at viewpoint presentation of a grand narrative, that most people would complain a lot about, calling out "plot holes" about every little thing you have to pick out from the environment and off-hand mentions, because the main cast is just regular people whose own small lives get uprooted because of the war and the grand scheme of things. I hate when the entire stories in modern fiction cater exclusively to people with Chekov's gun up their ass.
Still, if they would make a LE movie now, I'd hope it to compromise towards that direction. Partly because you need a huge runtime to fit in the kind of human stories that LE tells, but partly because now that the background is already there, it's much less of a sacrifice to make a few-hour story about the most showy parts. Retelling of Last Exile from that viewpoint of the more heroic characters would be a good backdrop to stealthily re-make just the parts in LE that weren't all that great or cause accessibility problems to people who aren't all that bright.
