Excessive Effects Anonymous 02/06/2016 (Sat) 05:33:28 [Preview] No. 4238 [Reply]
Does anyone else feel somewhat dizzy whenever playing newer games? Things like in the Dying Light pic, despite running at a decent FoV and max settings with constant 60fps still feel dizzy. It's hard to focus on things, and I just end up getting a headache while trying to get a clear picture of what the fuck is going on during fights or ESPECIALLY cutscenes. It's not even this game specifically, I've had this problem with a lot of games for a few years now.

Meanwhile with things like the Blade of Darkness pic, it just feels crystal clear and actually pleasant to play.

I always turn that shit off, they make the games look less realistic

I think having more effects makes it more marketable, I am sure most devs would like to focus in other areas, but when it comes down to it, marketing team gets final say.

This is why I hated M&B Warband. The original game had just the perfect level of graphics, so you could see clearly what was happening. Then they added terrible mocap animations on these San Andreas-tier models, and I can't see whats happening in the reflexive combat.

Max payne 3 Anonymous 01/11/2016 (Mon) 01:59:33 [Preview] No. 1916 [Reply]
so i just finished max payne 3, and god damn is it an insult to the franchise ( really just the first one because the second one was about half as bad as this one)

I fucking hate rockstar, there never quite sure if they want to make a movie, or a game, and end up with neither. First off, i had to sit and watch fucking cutscenes for the first 20 minutes to set up everything and get it out of the way, which is an obnoxious amout of time, i want to play a game, not watch a fucking movie. then, and i can only assume they do this because "muh immerseion," instead of making clear delineations between cutscene and game, they like to throw you right back into the game the second the cutscene ends. this sounds immersive™ on paper, but for me, it meant i couldnt relax and take my hands off the KB+M and enjoy the fucking 3 minute movie because i had to be on the alert for when the game threw me back into the shooting.

oh, and another thing, after every.fucking.cutscene. max pulls out his fucking pistol, even though i have a rifle. WHY WOULD I WANT TO USE THE PISTOL IF IM HOLDING THE RIFLE? LET ME KEEP THE GODDAMN RIFLE EQUIPPED. THIS WOULDNT EVEN BE A PROBLEM IF YOU DIDNT IMMEDIATELY TAKE ME OUT OF THE CUTSCENE WITH BADGUYS IN MY FACE. FUCK, sometimes, id be given control back out of cover while being fired at and immediately die. not to mention the stupid fucking gun selection wheel is designed with gamepads in mind.

and thats another thing? why the FUCK am i taking cover? why is this even an option? this is max payne, not Gears of war. to further incentivise taking cover, shootdodge is nerfed to shit ( it takes max a second has to hunch is lard ass in the direction you jump and then max will just lay on the floor until you make him get up, and he gets up incredibly slowly) not to mention the enviroment is so incredibly cluttered or narrow in most places you cant even really take advantage of shootdodging without hitting something the moment you jump and being knocked out of it and on the floor.

i thought of some story driven open world games that HAVE a story and DO NOT have the MAIN plotline riddled with betrayal: Jagged alliance 2, oblivion, skyrim. frankly i dont know why i didnt think of them before.

granted, these games do feature elements of betrayal, and it would be to their detriment if they did not, but these games prove that it is possible to make an open world story that does not revolve around using cookie-cutter scripts. If anything, this shows that rockstar is just a bunch of lazy hacks who just so happened to have one of the best viral marketing campaigns of all time. well that and their games are impressive in other respects, or were depending on who you talk to.

Hey fuck you man, Max Payne 3 is a excellent piece of cake as the whole franchise. First, this is Max Payne and not another fucking random shitty shooter Activison's game , is suppose to have a cutscenes developing the main story of the game, if you wanted cheap scenes and low budget dialogues, go play GTA and get your ass out of here. Second, do you really want to see a "loading" screen after a cutscene ? Seriously, dude. You're in the 7th consoles generation and not playing a fucking N64, it's suppose to have inovation like the cutscenes interacting with the properly gameplay and giving a more realistic tone to the game. So, if you want crappy gameplays, go back to Playstation 2.

>why the FUCK am i taking cover?

Because you're in a gunbattle, dumbass. That's what people do when they are in situations like that.

>why is this even an option? this is max payne, not Gears of war

Play the Oldschool mode, fucking retard.

>, is suppose to have a cutscenes developing the main story of the game

When the cutscenes are shit, and take away control from the player for too long it's a problem. There's also the shitty as fuck pseudo cutscenes where you're only able to walk in one direction, or preform VERY specific actions.

>go play GTA

The series that has retarded over drawn cutscenes you have to see or miss out on mission objectives plus hints?

>That's what people do when they are in situations like that.

In MP1 and arguably MP2 Max's abilities are anything but normal, it's like something out of the game Path Of Neo, but without the martial arts.

>play the oldschool mode

Sure, but that doesn't do away with the shitty level design that's geared towards shitty cover based shooting. Nor does it do away with the GTA/MP2 inspired level design as this post below adequately pointed out in a nutshell.

>If you wanted cheap scenes and low budget dialogs,
To be completely honest 'Cheap scenes and low budget dialogs' sound like they have a better chance at being good than your average funded-from-the-getgo AAA blockbusters. Which this this game portrays pretty well.

I still remember cringing hard at Max insulting himself and his own when he gets mugged as soon as he enters the favelas
>"[...] they hate people like me, and they have good reason to. I'm one of the tourists looking through hardened glass at them before cozying up back in a hotel [...]" or something along those lines
It's not even like it fits the character: he says this as he is determined enough to find the purposefully despicable rich girl/guy/whoever -- oh wait, they were actually just party-absorbed somewhat nice individuals that didn't even rub him the wrong way but he still goes out of his way to hate them just 'case the author can't contain his faggotry to his twitter feed -- and you know what? I'm done reminiscing more of this game, Undertale was less cringeworthy and it was barely a game.
At the end of the day Gameplay could have saved it, but it was obviously made to play on Normal mode -the cover system is so slow it makes the Guys of War look like world champion sprinters- taking away even further the little replayability it had. It was such a wreck I didn't realize it had good gunplay until I someone pointed it out to me, but little good it does to a game that is physically uncomfortable to play.

Just now I'm listening to Brad Wardell brag about how companies like Paradox bypass the media because journos don't prioritize exposure based on how bloated the budget gets. Top topping kek. Corruption only sucks when you're not the one getting a share. Here's some effective and customer-friendly grassroots marketing for Paradox, I bet.

While arguing with normalfags I realized that right now there are faggots on 8channel and 4channel/v/ that will defend ME2's;

Disk Locked Content
Cut Content in the name of DLC
Draconian DRM
Shitloads of bugs
Simplification of RPG mechanics for third rate TPS mechanics done better in 2005's Kill Switch
Simplification of Dialogue trees

I seriously hope this is not the case on endchan /v/ as well.

OP is either an EA shill or is legitimately surprised that the nuthouses are filled with retards. Not sure which is worse.

And Jade Empire is merely the top of the shit sundae that is BioWare's ongoing commitment to producing railroading set pieces rather than proper RPGs like what they used to (Its saving graces being that at least here they tried to do something interesting with the setting and combat.

Everything since BGII has been console trash for plebs because "golly 3D sure is harder than isometric"; and there's been doubly no reason to touch anything of theirs since their acquisition by The Great Satan (Other than Actiblizzion).

No I sincerely doubt that. But what is impressive, is how no one has correctly noticed that ME2 is basically a massive series reboot from top to bottom.

Pick a favorite game, find a negative review you can't disagree with Anonymous 08/08/2016 (Mon) 04:16:58 [Preview] No. 9709 [Reply]
I have a game for you /v/, think about one of your favorite games in a specific genre. Now try to find a negative review for it, but the catch is that it's a negative review you're having a hard time disagreeing with.

I picked Empire Earth 2, it's my favorite 4x RTS out there and it's even superior to Rise of Nations, however this review while negative, really hit the nail with problems I encountered with the game and documentation.

This review is from Amazon, he gave it a 3/5 stars

>Stainless Steel Studios has good timing with games. The first *Empire Earth* crossed my laptop as I was settling into my mobilization for Operation Nobel Eagle. I'd come home from long patrols and unwind with a heaping of world domination. I seemed to have an easier time of it than our current Administration.

>Now Mad Doc takes over and returns the series as I am mobilizing against the Real Time Strategy genre. I'm sick of retread RTS games whose publishers promise much, but deliver something too safe. With American culture currently awash in remakes and rehashes, it seems nobody can produce anything fresh or innovative anymore.

>*Empire Earth II* doesn't change my perception. But it's as solid an RTS as anybody has managed: being streamlined enough for anybody to get the hang of it, but with enough useful details and tweaks to separate the men from the boys. It also looks and sounds good.

>Graphics definitely makes demands of my Radeon 9800 AiW and my 1G of Kingston ECC memory: aside from the great-looking explosions, shrapnel, and dust clouds, EEII suffers from horrendous slow down whenever more than a few units or civilizations exist on the screen. Shutting off the good-looking weather and seasonal effects didn't seem to matter. Audio booms deep, loud, and clear over my home theater system. *EEII* one-ups *Rise of Nations* in audio and video.

>*Empire Earth II* plays more like *Rise of Nations* than its own predecessors. However, marketers tried to make *RoN* seem like a real-time *Civilization*, when it was really just another *Starcraft* knock-off. *EEII* at least announces up front, "Hey, I'm an RTS".

>So *EEII* falls into the Imperial RTS subgenre with Blizzard mechanics. Players select with the left-click and execute unit orders with the right-click, except for special powers and building orders, which are executed and canceled in exactly the opposite way. Players build town halls/ command centers to generate labor units who mine and build everything else.

I've been sitting on a first vague iteration of my project since a week or so and couldn't bring myself to post about it. Anyway.

>What is this?
In short, a Metacritic like website with better statistics. I have first posted this idea quite some time ago on half-chan, didn't get any post. Then on 8chan a short time after the exodus, I could get a few posts that showed interest, but what I had in mind was too complicated and was left to wonder how I could simplify it, until I realized I had the answer before my eyes and started coding.
I guess I should have posted about how it would work before coding but here I am.

>Why make it that way?
I aim to adress the problems with having a single digit describing games:
- Each user doesn't necessarily have the same scale range.
e.g.: x<75 means trash, 75<x<90 is good and x>90 is great?
Or is it x<50 a bad game 50<x<75 a good game and x>75 good enough?
-> Instead of a numerical value, user will describe their view as "dislike", "dislike with pros", "like with cons", "like". This scale has an interal value of 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively. I don't know if another type of appreciation scale is needed but that should do for now.

- How can someone describe an average game that has several flaw yet is an enjoyable game and a great game but with critical flaw that limits its potential? 75% each?
-> Users will select attributes describing aspects of the game and their appreciation of it, rather than selecting a single value for the whole thing. This should give a more accurate description of the game content

- Interested parties pulling the average toward a specific direction
-> Since different groups will be displayed, you can check what those groups have affinity with and decide for yourself if they just have different taste, paid to make these reviews, or have some axe to grind.

>Things that will change from the current form
- The aggregation display, it will be a more synthetical view, word cloud or whatnot.
- The client code, its current form comes from previous attempts, and not knowing what I would need for the UI, how it would be organized. So there's a lot of function not used, not really organized, etc.
