NIS America apologizes for quality of Ys VIII localization, fix due out by end of November. Anonymous 10/11/2017 (Wed) 01:28:51 [Preview] No. 11279 [Reply] [Last 50 Posts]
>To All Customers of Ys VIII,
>Thank you for all the feedback and support we have received since the launch of Ys VIII. It has come to my attention that the quality of the Ys VIII localization has not reached an acceptable level by our own standards, but most importantly by yours. As president of NIS America, Inc. I want to apologize to you personally for this grave error. This situation should not have happened – especially to a game as wonderful as Ys VIII and by a company that strives to deliver the very best customer experience in each title. We have begun internally to investigate the causes of this situation as well as to implement steps to ensure that a similar situation does not occur again.
>As for Ys VIII itself, we will have a new translator and editor go over the entire localization to fix grammatical errors, typos, inconsistencies, and also to take a fresh look at the dialog and characterizations. For the script, where necessary, we will re-translate and re-edit the game including updating voicework to reflect these changes. We plan to have this work done by the end of November and will offer the updated localization free of charge for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game via patch. The Steam version of the game will include this localization in its initial release.
>We humbly request your patience in this process.
>Again, as the president and CEO of NIS America, Inc, I deeply apologize and vow to you that we will bring the quality of the localization of Ys VIII up to the high standards that it and you deserve.
>Please allow us this opportunity to restore your faith in NIS America, Inc.
>Sincerely, Takuro Yamashita
RIP NISA

Where's that quivering vase screenshot? I'm still looking forward to the PC port, if it works. Man, xseed isn't perfect, but I sure wish they were the ones to translate this instead of incompetent nisa and there are far worse studios in my mind, all from the U.S of A, classically, but at least these fuckheads bother to write an apology unlike the rest of the typically malicious, uninspired companies plaguing video games.

I take bad grammar over dumb American colloquialisms any day, if anything it reminds me of the good old days. I can even take memes as long as they're not as bad as NoA does it, but my waifu games are thorougly buttfucked by the joshit weeaboos at NISA. Thank heavens dubs are an extra expense so they're usually confined to text. It's sad that grammar even gets complaints because that may tip the scales to even a worse option that consumers end up paying for.

I have to wonder who they are hiring to not know basic English grammar.

It just brings me back to my old Xbox which randomly turns off now, I'll never forget the first time I played Otogi 1&2, Metal Arms Glitch in the System, Second Sight, Psy Ops Mindgate Conspiracy, Breakdown, MGS2 and so many other mindblowing titles filled with so many awesome ideas.

The 5 Crash Bandicoot games on the PS1 used to be really nostalgic for me until I played them to death and the nostalgia wore off.

Also Kula World.

I had forgotten this altogether, its such an underutilized song but an amazing composition. What a weird thing to exist hidden in some cartridge that can barely fit audio files.

I never stop playing games just because they're old, so it's hard for music to trigger nostalgia in me. Try this on though.

platformer stuff Anonymous 09/17/2017 (Sun) 16:23:07 [Preview] No. 11210 [Reply] [Last 50 Posts]
Platformer is called a genre, but it's so inaccurate that it's essentially a style of presentation, like 2D. It's woefully useless at describing what kind of challenge you're in for because it includes any games that have a gravitational pull to a single direction. I'm always being sold a "platformer" that ends up being carried by some entirely different mechanic but it has an occasional, trivial hole to jump over every here and there. I haven't even played most Vanillaware games yet because they don't seem to fit my niche, but I hate that I have to rely on my hunch about these things so much since reviews don't even clearly mention what kind of details there is to a game. Usually they neglect to mention everything that isn't obvious from screenshots anyway, like when they go on and on about Super Meat Boy being hard as nails as you kinda expect but won't say what kind of physics premise it's using.

Medium gravity, strong jump force and slight slip platforms that stick on contact by the way is how I would describe it. Contrast that with There's No Time To Explain having strong gravity, weak jump force, but boost momentum buildup that results in a lot more physics-based platforming. Both have the thing that's best explained by not being fixed jumping arcs. You can move in air. It's better to assume so for every game and take Castlevania as a special case, but you have to know what to say is the main difference between Metroidvanias and Classicvanias.

And that's not even exactly what I mean by platforming, it's just the control half of it. Although I guess a good game actually includes all possible kinds of interesting challenge for a given set of controls, so you can just rule them as good or bad, but I'm not really satisfied with that conclusion.

New Umihara Kawase is in development for Switch. It's a puzzle platformer where you attempt to find a path you can traverse using impossible rope physics. The way it works is you launch a fishing line that has rubbery stretch physics, and pressing up or down changes the factor of stretch it has, launching you forwards that much sooner or later with appropriate force.

It's not for humans.

I recommend it.

I started playing this one for the SNES not sure if it's the first one in the series or not. It's really something completely different I must say. I had no idea what I was getting into but once I started moving up the treadmill thing I hooked I was a bit amazed tbqh.
I love when a platformer does something just a bit different and makes an entire new type of game. Like VVVVVV with the gravity flipping instead of jumping turned traversing upside down :^)

Anonymous 09/25/2017 (Mon) 09:19:51 [Preview] No. 11244 del
Platformers still with one-hit-kill are almost like their own genre. It's certainly something people usually mention very early on when they're describing what kind of gameplay you are to expect. Super Mario Bros. might have been a forerunner in yet another way by introducing the power mushroom mechanic that kept the general idea that you're really not supposed to be hit even once, but drastically lowering the skill cap for that kind of gameplay without going into the territory of Mega Man and health conservation. It's funny that the same franchise now is the butt of the joke that you can never have too many pointless 1-ups.

When you lose your momentum after swinging you should fall down and hang like a stone at the end of a rope. Just like if you push a kid on a swing, eventually they lose momentum and just hang there. I don't like this "jiggle around until you're swinging really fast again.

If they want to make it real and challenging, the kid should be forced to just let go when he runs out of momentum, and fall into the water/die.

Tatsumi Kimishima is bringing Nintendo back to the cutthroat corporate stylings of the Yamauchis', surely. That means they will finally rob the grave of Gunpei Yokoi that the previous commie regime "honored" out of "respect", and start churning out mass-pandering remakes and iterations of the IP's buried with Nintendo R&D1, such as Ice Climber and Princess Daisy, along with newfangled passing trends like "good netcode", whatever that is.

A lot of creative pull is also going to come from Yoshiaki Koizumi, a loose cannon creative who did off-kilter game changing decisions like Majora's Mask's central mechanic, produced Super Mario Galaxy and also Super Mario 3D World, and wrote the backstories of Rosalina and in Link's Awakening.

Anonymous 10/04/2017 (Wed) 18:39:39 [Preview] No. 11268 del
A strong reason why Mario games have been fairly formulaic in story is because it's an afterthought, they have a very producer-driven mindset that the platformer guy is going to make a platformer and it shall be branded with that guy's trademarks. This is why Gunpei Yokoi created Sarasaland and Daisy for his Game Boy games, that were largely left unused after his departure from the company. And hence with Mario Galaxy, Princess Rosalina was introduced to reflect better on the storytelling sensibilities of Koizumi. It's a very typically Japanese way of putting on airs of a no-touch rule over creations that in some sense belong to another creator, and it's hard to say how the current changes in Nintendo will affect it. Kimishima's leadership is tentative as he was an emergency fill-in and they're supposedly looking for a new CEO, which I don't doubt will be a very challenging affair since none of the trusted creatives have the kind of business wisdom as Iwata did. It's also hard to believe they'd go out of the family business model and into the more usual way of hiring the best CEO they can get from the open market, as we usually see with tech companies that juggle the same multi-millionaire businessmen around between each other. My bet is on that they will settle on a trusted internal CEO if not form the board of directors then somebody nearing the possiblity to get promoted into it, but ditch the attempt to have relatable public persona within the game production branch be tied to it. It would be a good strategy if it can be maintained, but if the guy doesn't exist then he just doesn't.

Remind me again, what are some games with an essential mechanic of an independently controllable 『o p t i o n 』 that hovers around your character? I like the multilateral thinking of moving in a traditional way but at the same time giving commands in a strategic way.

The Kirby Superstar companion was computer controlled. He basically just got his ass kicked and exploded all over the place.

it was easier to win without him. Sadly every time you changed powers you made him.

Still ove of my favorite games, I wish to it was more difficult and the blocking wasn't so effective. Wish more games had that gameplay too since it got so many elements right and the variety of powerups kept it fresh to replay.

You can play 2nd char on second controller. And Sonic 2+ has had 2 characters for play, but not a requirement. I used to play coop games like what you mean on flash, something about fire and ice.
Maybe if you recall how the characters looked like, some of the scenes, etc..

Would love to play a game like that, or develop one later on. Right now my focus is a true F.L.O.S.S. mugen like engine using either Godot or some other saner code base. Then from there make my dream "clone" of my fav. game of all time. Oh, and I owe GamerFruit@diceeurope first his game, so yours even more in the back burner. And I owe with that engine a specific game the gods told me to make, even if it's not my genre at all.

Maybe they should remake Knuckles' Chaotix. Physics platformers have come a long way.

I'm surprised nobody's brought up The World Ends with You/Subarashiki since its core mechanic was controlling two characters on two screens with two control schemes.
