Following a suggestion from a painfully autistic (although well intentioned) user posting on /tech and /operate, this board now has a desktop thread.

Show off your desktops, phones, ricing, rigs and stations here.

Anyone posting must also offer advice to others and help the beginners.

To honour the tradition the desktops in this post are all over ten years old.

Also worth mentioning, how the hell did they get any work done on an 800x600 screen?

Can't some admin do their job and delete this thread?
I seriously, don't want this place to be like /tech/.

Is that tetris in emacs?
What wm is that? Care to right click any where for us?

You should make your desktop background an off colour to your window colour, should be easier on your eyes because that is a fairly high contrast and the bg also fucks with my eyes for some reason.

This thread is not against the board rules. The moderators' "job" is not to cater to your whims.

>I seriously, don't want this place to be like /tech/.
You seem to be confused. This is /tech/.

What is the display server like for plan9? I looked it up, if I'm correct it's called rio and the config looks simpler than x11. I would imagine it to be pretty laggy without the driver support of x.

This thread is the classical example of reactance:
>Reactances can occur when someone is heavily pressured to accept a certain view or attitude. Reactance can cause the person to adopt or strengthen a view or attitude that is contrary to what was intended, and also increases resistance to persuasion.

rio is the plan9 window manager and it is in my humble experience not at all laggy

Yes, rio is the plan9/9front windowing system.

>I would imagine it to be pretty laggy without the driver support of x.
I'm not sure why that would be the case. A number of other non-UNIX operating systems also do not use X (or its drivers) and are not "laggy" as a result.

I have found rio to be responsive. 9front comes with NES and SEGA Genesis emulators, and I'll be giving those a try soon. If they perform poorly, I'll report back. Though whether they perform poorly or well, it could be a function of something else (like my hardware) as opposed to rio per se.

Are you running the 386 version or the amd64 version? Or, I suppose, the arm version?

Have you tried Go on it? The FQA was updated to say that Go is currently broken on 9front/386, sadly.

You know what's interesting? Your "fake desktop thread" don't go against my point, it reinforces it. Instead of showing off the screenshot of your "riced WM", people are discussing about configuration scripts and drivers. That's exactly my point, good job.

What's even more interesting is that in response to a desktop thread being posted, most people did not clench their assholes and start REEEEEEEing like an autistic child throwing a temper tantrum. Most people just went about their business.

There's a lesson in that for you, if you're willing to learn it. You're not.

I take it easy. Smooth dashboard for my enjoyment. Compositing enabled I make use of the latest opacity and animation modifications. The icons move so much when clicked its plausable deniability.Kde is the most functional for my use. I like a big blue cursor that looks like its from a point and click game.Got to have my rss feed ticker right next to the time. Its about staying in touch so I make use a stylus on a wacom tablet instead of a mouse.

That's basically stock mwm. I just edited the menu in ~/.mwmrc to add an entry for "links -g". Always have a maximized xterm with gnu screen, so the old school stipple pattern X background isn't even visible, except for a tiny sliver at the bottom.
In fact, I'd rather avoid X altogether, but my framebuffer doesn't have graphics.
wsdisplay0 at efifb0 mux 1: console (std, vt100 emulation), using wskbd0
wsdisplay0: screen 1-5 added (std, vt100 emulation)
^ OpenBSD kernel says I have a fb, but trying to do anything with SDL or whatever just spits out a "not supported" error. The console fonts are pretty ugly too. I'd probably spend a lot more time at the console if it was possible to redefine the characters like on 80's computers. That alone was enough to make interesting things!
