Radiation might not cause bit flips down here but that's only because earth's magnetosphere shields us, on a satellite they are common enough that every thing NASA (and most likely other agencies) sends up is radiation hardened. Which in the context of CPUs means everything is done twice since radiation shielding isn't feasible.

Google Earth's pictures of Antarctica and the North Pole are shit because less than 1% of the population lives there. Your best option for satellite imagery is probably NASA's High-res imagery. (Bing and Mapbox apparently take "creative liberties" when it comes to the northern ice cap.)
