Are 3D games truly libre? Anonymous 03/15/2017 (Wed) 06:18:54 [Preview] No. 248
It's well known that 3D support on free software distros is less than ideal. And in computers certified by the FSF as using only free software, 3D graphics card acceleration is often nonexistent. And let's not even start with free hardware! The point is, do you consider that libre games that only work with 3D acceleration hinder the adoption of fully free distros?

Absolutely. I don't install any game that would require a non free library, however I do have the proprietary graphics driver installed. It's the only proprietary software on an otherwise free distro. The support for my graphics card was so bad, I had lag moving the mouse on the desktop. My card was supposedly supported but I didn't realise how bad the radeon drivers were. If I was a new user to free software, attracted by the offering of games, unless I was lucky enough to have a supported nvidia card I would likely just move on.
Although the question is, do the games make it seem bad by being too advanced for the drivers, or are drivers to blame?

I think a big part of the problem is also that some games were made for a proprietary software environment with the latest advances and were then later licensed as free software. These are often big titles and attract well developed communities around them, so when they enter the libre gaming realm a high expectation is put on graphics driver developers to make it play. This advance can then become the standard for other open source projects.
An example of this can be the use of later opengl versions which many intel drivers don't support, which is contrary to the fact that intel chips have the best completely libre offering.
