Vidya thread Bernd 03/24/2017 (Fri) 17:24:08 [Preview] No. 358
Games are always a good topic on imageboards. So.

Finished NFS Underground 2. For the nth time. The ending is very anti-cathartic: after a disappointing and glitchy race against the main adversary (sometimes his car jumps into nowhere) the player gets a shitty yoohoo cutscene and a your winner message.

Started to fiddle around with a new game: Battle Brothers. With some early access version as only today was released the final, full version. Couldn't find a torrent of that yet but it's still very fresh so no biggie.
The inspiration for the developer came from games like: " The original X-Com, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Mount & Blade and Jagged Alliance".
You command a mercenary company, waltz around on a strat map, fight battles on tactical maps, hire warriors and do quests. Enjoyable but seems boring on the long run. I hope they will make it moddable eventually because I think it lacks some features (would be nice a main char, a notary and other stuff).
We'll see what the future holds for this game.

I just wasted 2 nights on battle brothers FUG
It's very fun and addicting ("I'll just do one more contract, and I'll stop playing"). Maybe it will get boring on long run, but as for now there are constantly new things appearing (mostly new kind of enemies which requires different strategy). Also I've read that after some ~80 days there's a great crisis, like undead invasion or war between noble houses, so brobably game does not last forever. Also also I'm playing some early access from year ago, so there's probably more content actually.

Bernd 03/25/2017 (Sat) 23:19:40 [Preview] No. 1173 del

I still don't know when late game starts.
But it's quite fun. I experimented with different character builds not much tho adn different mix of troops. Archers would be quite important to hunt down enemy archers and magic users but they are quite ineffective, still on lvl 7-8.
Choosing the right combination of traits and preferred skills is very important.

Don't you liek games, Bernd? What do you play with?

Bernd 03/29/2017 (Wed) 16:48:41 [Preview] No. 3928 del
So I am at day ~40 of battle brothers and I have mixed feelings.
Please have in mind that I'm still playing 0.6.something early access version, so those might have changed in final release.
It's all fun overall, but I reached a moment when it starts get annoying. When on the beginning someone died, it wasn't a big deal, because they were cheap and shit anyway, easy replacable by any peasant willing to exchange his life of farming for life of mercenary.
Now when I have battle-hardened veterans when someone die it's very annoying, because you cared for this character for so long, and also it cripples your team a lot now. And they die a lot because enemies became so hard. Necromancers and their skeleton armies. Orc warriors. Even goblins became more deadly recently for me. When you replace the deceased one, it's either again a lowly peasant or beggar who can't put a real fight on his 1st level, or a expensive veteran, but then your contract doesn't pay you enough for this shit. So last alternative is loading game again and again until you miraclously beat everyone withoud dying, or you give up from doing that contract.
So I was thinking, maybe I could just buy them a better equipment? I have enough crowns to make a few really heavily armored mercs. But no, fuck you fatigue. Even with leather+shield+basic helmet most of my bernds can't do shit in the middle of the battle already,
and with heavy armor they will be useless like after 2 turns.
So I don't feel like playing this game anymore which is shame because other then that it's really great.

Bernd 03/29/2017 (Wed) 17:35:34 [Preview] No. 3966 del
>>3928
Oh I feel what you wrote.
For me the fatigue problem isn't much of a problem up to the mid-weight armors (about 140 durability). Fatigue is one of the most important ability so at every level up it needs to be upgraded. Some traits can help (Strong, Iron Lungs) but then again when your mercs start to drop it's impossible to replace these guys.
Maybe some combination of skills can help.

Now it's day 40 in my game.
And yes around day 100 a great crisis will arise depending on the settings it can vary a bit. In case the great crisis averted the game goes on and a new crisis will arise. And so on.

Right now I have 17 mercs (max is 20):

highes level guy:
lvl 6: 85 Fatigue, armor 110/-10, helmet 110/-7, weapon -14

heavieast armor guys, I have five of them
armor 115/-12
their weapon varies one and two handed, they don't have shields
their Fatigue goes like this: 68 85 88 89 107
The 68 Fat. dude is only on lvl 3.

I try to increase all the mercs fatigue at every level and pick skills which increase it or lower the effects which decrease them (Brawny is great) and fits their role ofc.

I might get back into the FPS genre again. The problem is all of the good ones have mostly dead communities. I'll probably just settle back into classic Doom single player since there is not much else these days and classic Doom multiplayer is a cesspit of furries and children.

I actually have a few vanilla configs for both Odamex and Zandronum that I used on my LAN for a while. Chocolate-Doom is more my thing though, but nobody plays it.

>why not brutal doom?
Because all that mod does is attract immature children who weren't even born when Quake 3 was released let alone Doom. If I wanted to put up with that crap I would go play the reboot, which is id's half-assed Brutal Doom clone in a modern engine with enough hand-holding to be a CoD clone.

Two times I tricked myself into playing Diablo 2 thinking it will be awesome as generally I liek crpgs. Then it was perpetual walking around and constantly clicking just to grow some numbers ad infinitum.
That's probably the catch of all crpgs. One thing is what computers do well: adding numbers. If one is lucky enough the writing of the story, the npcs, the setting, the choices will make it more enjoyable. Usually it isn't the case.
At tabletop the reverse is true. The atmosphere is good the implementation of fighting is crappy. While the excitement of waiting to see how the dice rolls is an absolute necessity the calculating of 'who's next, is it a hit, how much damage' just ruins the feels.

It was a mistake to take begginner difficulity, but I though it would be as hard as the lowest in early access, which was pretty fucking hard as described in my previous posts. But eh, at least I don't get mad for losing too often. I'm at day ~60 btw.
Also one of my guys was a wildman. He's pretty tough warrior, but he caused a scene in one city, and I refused to pay reparations, killed the milita who tried to enforce me to pay denbts and now I'm at war with 1/3 of the cities on map :DDD
Can't beat a proffesional company of soldiers yet. Strange that half of their troops wear no helmets (just those fancy hats) but somehow I can't hit them in the head and decapitate instantly.

Wildmen are usually a good choice. My most agile heaviest fighters are tend to be them. Started a new game btw (it's like my 4th time, only one time managed to reach the first great crisis).
When I recruit a dude (save, hire, check stats, reload, hire those who seem all right) I check their fatigue, how high and if it has a star or two. Same with one attacking skill (except it's moar like 2-3 stars), a third skill isn't that important.
I check the traits also. Recruiting only those who are Strong or has Iron Lungs aren't feasible. I'm all right if the dude don't have any negative trait, if he has an advantageous one the better.

Where are all the stronk wimminz? This is very problematic and unacceptable.

Looks like you can fuck up on begginner too.
So it's day 90. Undeads everywhere and such. I took a contract to defend a village from invasion, pays 7000 crown, who would not take it? I even get a company of professional soldiers and local milita as help.
Then the first battle starts.
Forces are situated this way, that the shittiest milita is on front, and I'm on the back. No way to save them from the slaughter. Of course after that we win easily, but after battle I get notification that because of high casualties friendly forces are leaving what le fuck.
Then the wave 2 and 3 happens. It's very tough, I win without loses but my forces are severly depleted. A mistake I made is that I don't have reserves. I though I will keep my company elite, and later in the game only recruit expensive veterans from military backgrounds. I have only 14 men now. No time between battles to heal wounds. No time to repair equipment. It's 4th wave and they keep coming. If I retreat undead will turn this city into their fortress and my employee will hate me, but I have no chances to win. FUCK

Haha, that sounds fun.
I recruit people up to 16 brother and rotate them. Also military background won't necessarily give good soldiers, even a bard could be a talent, it's totally random I think. There are some backgrounds that give bonuses for one thing or another. However it seems Retired Soldiers tend to be good material for sergeant (not all the time) so I'm not sure maybe there are other patterns.
I play around with tactics and weapons. For example I use 4 archer and put them into the second row but now I put them into the first then move them back when the time comes or just step forward with the melee types. Or I try to have two spearmen and channel the enemy to certain part of my line with the spearwall ability. Smarter enemy tends to avoid them.

I stopped playing Battle Brothers I've half mind to continue. I thought I calculate the optimal Fatigue to have but the lack of my interest holds me back.
I played a bit The Guild 2 Renaissance, vanilla and Fajeth's (or whoever's) modpack but it got boring fast so I stopped with that too. The modded version much better especially that one can chose the frequency of assembly meetings, and the game runs faster thanks to changed mechanics which is important to me as with Wine everything is slower than playing on Windows. stories are different for each game but in general it's pretty much just a typical fictional medieval setting
the gameplay is turn-based strategy with grid-based movement, so in that sense you could say it's kind of similar to chess

There are some differences beside the cosmetics. The first one tends to have larger maps and maybe longer campaigns. In the second the units has the chance at leveling up to gain a leader with unique ability, there's overwatch, also the units can attack and move even if you click away. I think there were other conveniences too. The 2 is the better one but the first is the real classic.
Also they made Allied General, Pacific General, People's General, and a 3rd PzG, but none of them could really grab my attention.

Good turn based strat. Good up until it's repetitiveness gets to the player. Especially the sieges become boring fast. I'm not nowhere near of it so I still try to enjoy. Actually it's quite time consuming game. "Just one more turn" type. Somtimes crashes tho, so quick save comes in handy.

hmm let's play some EU4 (note that I'm playing a version that's outdated by about 8 months)

with bavaria start there isn't really much you can do; you can't do colonization, you can't expand much due to the emperor kcmodding you, but it's a pretty good start considering that besides bordering bohemia and austria you can easily make the two fight each other while slowly absorbing one province minors on the other side. oh and you get a couple flavour events so that's good.

He will, yes. The key is to do it slowly enough that the opinion modifier decays by the time you gobble up the next one.

So, since Bohemia decided to have me rivaled from day one, I decided to ally Burgundy from the start. I'm improving relations with Saxony too, because they are elector. To avoid too much border tension I'm gonna leave Salzburg. Took the mission to conquer Ansbach, they promptly allied The Palatinate, which is my historical rival anyway and I'm gonna get more events to get their lands later. Also making Württemberg my friend for extra punch if needed, they are rivals with a couple territories I want to absorb slowly.

Bernd 05/03/2017 (Wed) 20:09:02 [Preview] No. 6093 del
All right. I've decided to get the army maintenance up and swiftly take Ansbach instead of waiting. I have 11k against Ansbach's 4k and Palatinate's 8k. Even if I don't bring in Württemberg's 4k by promising them clay I could probably do it (my general will ignore river crossing).

The thing is, The Palatinate has allied with both Bohemia and Austria so I need to separate peace them demanding to break alliances.

Bernd 05/03/2017 (Wed) 20:59:11 [Preview] No. 6095 del
Ansbach is down, The Palatinate was forced to break alliances and pay war reparations, and Württemberg wasn't even bothered they didn't get any territory since Ansbach was one province and can't divide that.

So far it's running smoothly, now I wait for a while before I can absorb... hmm, Augsburg?

So. This Black Army was the mercenary army of Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary (1458-1490). Their numbers fluctuated between 5000 and 28 000. Judging by the names in the notary books majority of them were Czechs. There were lots of Germans, Poles and Serbs among them too with some Hungarians. Hungarians weren't too prominent because they mostly served in the feudal units of the country.
The Black Army had five branch: infantry, heavy cavalry, light cavalry, artillery and navy. There were four types of infantry: light, armored, pavise and arquebus.
We don't know the origin of the name. Of course they didn't have uniforms back then but one of their captain, Jan Haugwitz was fond of black garments and they named the unit after him. Or maybe the color of the raven on Matthias' CoA gave the inspiration. Or who knows it's possible they weren't even called that until later times after they were long gone.

a lil situation update

I have absorbed ansbach, augsburg, salzburg, and oberpfalz

nürnberg, ulm, memmingen and ravensburg are imperial cities so emperor will defend them; so my next target is taking bamberg and maybe würzburg too (depending on how much aggressive expansion that will take); then use flavour mission cassus belli to take pfalz and heidelberg from trier

I am allied with hungary, brandenburg, denmark (which has integrated norway) and savoy (replaced burgundy once it took a severe pounding by france)

I took diplo and admin ideas, will prob take defensive or aristo next

I am a bit pissed about muscovy not aiding their ally georgia which grew big and instead staying allied with the ottomans (but not aiding them in this war)

papal states has absorbed naples, iberian wedding didn't happen and aragon is currently beating castile in a war

poland inherited bohemia soon after a war in which I attacked bohemia (allied only with salzburg) instead of salzburg (in a trade league and having loads of allies) to take salzburg with lesser losses but higher expansion and diplo cost; poland threatened me to stop it so I had to bring brandenburg denmark and hungary in to win the war

stuff that happened

I couldn't sleep well so I played some EU4 early morning

I witnessed denmark get rekt by getting independence war'd by sweden just as their reformation civil war started, followed by russia attacking it for the territories in karelia

poland-lithuania meanwhile destroyed my other strong ally hungary; I tried to at as a bait for a while and poland only wanted me to break treaties anyway, but that led to hungary allying my rival milan and now they don't want to get back into the alliance

however, I got accidentally elected emperor since austria had female heir. I had no intention to play as emperor so I will probably just use that to destroy the empire from within

after braunschweig conquered saxony, I have decided to make them elector to quickly get an ally in the empire, especially since brandenburg their neighbour and my former ally is also an elector but they turned pr*testant

I have added würzburg, bamberg, heidelberg and württemberg to my realm, and extorted a shiload of shekels

meanwhile, poland also managed to defeat ottomans and muscovy because france came to their aid since the pope, poland's ally, called for crusade (and they also officially allied after the war)

my allies are currently: braunschweig, burgundy, ferrara, aragon, sweden, and hoping I can get hungary back somehow; if I manage to break milan's alliance somehow (plan 1: attack ravensburg, their ally is milan, separate peace milan for breaking the alliance and shekels) I might be able to do it

They're slightly elaborating on Russian internal politics of 15th century in next patch. But it's nowhere near the Ansbarcher levels of the HRE at the 1444 start. I wonder if they tidy up Russia in CK2 a bit too; Hungary got map updates on short succession in both games.

I ended up allying Hungary, maybe we split up Austria or something. Poland is unlikely to attack as both Hungary and Poland are allied with France, and Ottomans should focus on Poland, Poland has their cores and they're rivals.

Pr*testant League formed and Braunschweig, having recently converted, joined and broke alliance. Sweden is on my side (and I hope they don't convert too soon), Poland is with the pr*testants. France hasn't picked sides yet but I reckon they'll go with the pr*testants.

Oh also if I don't have a valid heir, the Imperial title goes to Sicily, which formed pretty early when Sicilian separatists got to Malta and Aragon didn't bother wiping them out. So they are a single province kingdom on Malta.

Depends on gameplay. Catholic is beneficial only if you play diplomatic and can fuck with the Curia. Controlling the Pope or even just having Papal Influence gives nice bonuses. Extra bonus is missionaries, needed if you want to deus vult some infidels. But if you can't you're only getting kcmodded. Protestant has a nice base tax bonus, and Reformed gives you nice bonuses of pickable flavour with Fervor (which I think is a DLC mechanic). For me it's generally a Catholic vs Reformed, Reformed gives more edge in a trade/colonisation game.

first, League war fired while I was aiding Sweden destroying Denmark; but luckily The Commonwealth didn't join. However, first Muscovy and then also Ottomans did, intervening as great powers. So I had to get Braunschweig, the League leader, down on knees so they could at least agree to give shekels, and sign Peace of Westphalia. Oh well.

Netherlands revolted, so I swapped them for Burgundy pretty soon.

Right now I'm in middle of a huge war when The Commonwealth decided to attack Brandenburg (otherwise my enemy), and I, as the Emperor, decided to bring in all my allies and try to beat France and The Commonwealth. On one side: The Commonwealth, France, Milan, Pomerania, on other side Brandenburg, Sweden, Norway, Bavaria, Austria, Hungary, England, Netherlands, Aragon. We managed to kick France out somehow, now it will be a bit easier.

>Were the Mongols 2,5th Rome? Russians addressed the Khan as Tsar (up to 1480).

No. There are two points:

First, concept of "Third Rome" arisen only after end on Mongol-Tatar yoke. Getting free from yoke also was a part of this contept, combined with unification of Russian lands by Muscowy. Big and strong free country etc. Quote from wiki (although Russian wiki has much more info):

>The idea of Muscovy as heir to Rome crystallized with a panegyric letter composed by the Russian monk Philotheus (Filofey) of Pskov in 1510 to their son Grand Duke Vasili III, which proclaimed, "Two Romes have fallen. The third stands. And there will be no fourth. No one shall replace your Christian Tsardom!"

Second, Mongols never considered as proper rulers in Russian historiography, and technically they weren't. It was tributary-style system, where local knyaz just payed money and gets approval from Horde (it wasn't required actually, payments matter). Mongols rarely messed in internal affairs, mostly when someone refused to pay, or when some knyaz asked them to remove some other knyaz. Famous Russian national hero, Alexandr Nevsky, become ally of Mongols (although they never conquered Novgorod directly) against his brother, and forced people to pay tribute. It was very complex time.

Authors have slight pro-Mongol bias, like our Eurasians.

>Surprisingly, the Mongol or Tatar Yoke proved beneficial to the
Russian people. Not only did their country emerge as a united nation as well as an ascending Eurasian power, the Russians also in
herited from their Tatar overlords their administrative, autocratic and military organizations. The rise of Moscow as Russia’s greatest city is also attributed to the Tatars

Russia could be formed without Mongols, and there were successful Russian states that weren't controlled by Mongols at all, like Grand Duchy of Lithuania (it was technically a Russian state, not Baltic, however Russian historiography is Moscow-centered so no one talks about it). And these lands often were more developed even when Russia already was free from Mongols.

Maybe Mongol-Tatar rule wasn't so bad as some people think, it wasn't too good and really slowed development of Russia. Although it is a hot topic in historian circles, especially in modern political mess.

I don't really know about western views on yoke, but in Russia it never was "black, black". Even in 19th there were prominent people like Karamzin who thought that yoke was good (as is mentioned in pdf), and Karamzin isn't marginal person, but author of very famous book about Russian history. Gumilev also supported this idea.

But there are archeological and written evidence about loss of production, decay in stone building and loss of population. I don't think that unifying of state and despotic administrative practices worth it, especially when we can see examples of working Russian states without this.

>What? Europe was a shithole back then. Even the west.

And Russian lands was slightly worse than West before Mongols, and became much worse after.

Orientalism was very much one of the obsessions of entire Europe during 19th century, so there's no surprise that in Russia you'd have folks proudly claiming that we wuz khans n shiet because that's fancy.
In music that's pretty prominent as well – Russian composers wrote orientalist pieces such as Rimskiĭ-Korsakov's Šeherezada, or Làpunov's Gašiš (excuse my fancy transcription), because hurr durr, we wuz khans

How? People lived in dark, smokey houses with rammed earthen floor, delve the soil with manual or animal force, dressed in rough cloths, eating the same dull meals over and over again, hard work and inconvenience, no real doctors and medicine, no household appliances to ease the load for centuries the same. The industrial revolution just made lots of things even worse for lots of people if not the most. All real changes in lifestyle and wealth is very recent.
Just because western church and high nobility could afford to build pretty (but still uncomfortable) places it doesn't mean they were so much better off.

But to link the discussion to the thread's topic:
Playing these games like EU4 or CK2 and seeing that certain places certain numbers are higher just creates the illusion of development.

We had slightly different situation here, although orientalism trend mattered too.

It was a prolonged process of nation-building. Karamzin was supported by emperor Alexander to write this book (History of Russian state). At this time concept of "our special way between Europe and Asia" was created, this book supported it and became some kind of official until even Soviet times. So, it was very political thing.

Later there were several prominent movements of Russian elites, Westernizers (zapadniki), Slavophiles (slavyanofily), Pochvenniki and more, who continued to discuss this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavophilia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pochvennichestvo

Soviet concepts sometimes were same, sometimes different, but it is another story.

>I mean, where do you think sauce tartare comes from?

Funny thing that word "Tartar" has no meaning in Russian except sauce. I guess common average Russian even has no idea that "Tartar" or "Tartary" is related to Tatars or Russia. Russian wiki about Tatars and Tatarstan or Russian state has no mention of this word.

Development is about production (from agricultural to manufacturing, iron/steel making etc), population (that mattered much more than now), cultivated land, army and military capabilities, cities, trade and much more.

These things directly related to life of common person. People from rich and developed regions could suffer less in famine years for example, because they had reserves and oversupply of food. Regions with cities in Middle Ages had access to cheaper local manufactured goods, and also had connections with others because of trade routes. Although difference for peasant wasn't that big, but it existed.

>Playing these games like EU4 or CK2 and seeing that certain places certain numbers are higher just creates the illusion of development.

I think CK2 concept of prosperity is more realistic than EU's development points system, but they need to add natural disasters, famine years, rainy years and more. Sadly CK2 is dying, last DLCs are cosmetic and don't address more serious issues in game.

Well, that's because sauce tartare was actually inspired by a Turkish yoghurty dip sauce called tarator, somewhat similar to Greek tzatziki. But apparently some clueless frogs thought it sounds a bit like "Tatar" which they found even fancier because muh vibrant eastern cultures. So no, it is not related to Tatars at all, only clueless westerners thought so.
Now steak tartare is a similar story, since originally it was called steak americaine, but eating it with sauce tartare to side was so popular that people usually ate steak americaine à la tartare which then shortened into steak tartare when everyone forgot about the original version. But then eating it with sauce tartare fell out of fashion so again we have steak tartare that has no connection to Tatars, despite retarded western perception that it was invented by Tatars who prepared it by putting meat under their saddle for a couple of days.

Main problem is not the engine as software, but structure and concept of game. CK2 uses same four-level feudal model (Emperor-King-Duke-Baron), levy and demesne/vassal systems for everything. This is ok and somewhat realistic for Western Europe at original game time period (1066-), but applying it to other parts of world looks horrible. Even Byzantines too unrealistic so Paradox invented viceroys and retinues to partially fix this.

They tried to fix game with tribal and horde model to make earlier dates look slightly better, but mechanics sometimes looks strange and unrealistic too. Some other game mechanics are just outdated but could be fixed, like crusades (especially "largest participant takes all") or decadence revolts (at least they need to look like adventurers with real armies, not suddenly appearing doomstacks from nowhere). Also no naval combat and much more.

However fixing all this is hard, I don't even know how to do it properly.

>This is ok and somewhat realistic for Western Europe at original game time period (1066-)
But there's one very important political situation that it can't cover – namely, the King of England being the biggest feudal lord in France, and also providing levies to the King of France from those holdings.
Also, it's five-level: Emperor-King-Duke-Count-Baron.

There's a couple issues with titles that could be fixed in terms of extra features added in later expansions, but weren't. For example, pagans get ridiculous attrition that's supposed to represent that, well, you're entering real wild lands there. But that really should instead be linked to development and not having Feudal holdings instead of being tied to religion in such a gamey manner.

Also, it doesn't make sense for Muslim countries to use De Jure kingdoms at all. But, we have dynamic titles added now – you can upgrade your Duchy to a Kingdom, so making Muslims ignore all De Jure titles larger than Duchies (representing regions), and have them create dynastic Kingdom titles instead, that have no De Jure land. Muslims have their own Cassi Bellorum, so they really don't need De Jure claims. That also solves the ridiculous situations when Christian kingdoms need to compete with Muslims for De Jure titles.
Similarly, Tribes should ignore De Jure land completely, and perhaps have ethnic Kingdoms created by decision.
Nomads were already converted to function in terms of CK2 system somewhat.

>crusades (especially "largest participant takes all")
Yep. Tried playing Afonso Henriques campaign once, Pope declares crusade on Andalusia, I get whole Andalusia in 4 years. WTF.

I'm glad Aragon and Hungary volunteered to tank like mad for me. But Commonwealth contributed 300k of those losses themselves.
Castille is actually pretty weak, it got beaten by Aragon-Morocco alliance at one point. They also only joined towards the end and didn't really care.
But judging on how much damage Aragon tanked I can see Castille finally being able to take them out in next war.
Now I'm waiting for Ottomans to declare war on Commonwealth since they've already forced Pomerania to break their alliance with them. When that happens it will be Ottomans and Muscovy vs Commonwealth and France.
I need to liberate Bohemia.

So. Liberation of Bohemia was seriously postponed. Ottomans decided to invade again; I was waiting for the Livonian Order to get enough war exhaustion from Muscovite invasion that they wouldn't join in defending the Commonwealth, which would allow me to call in Sweden (Livonians are allied with both Sweden and the Commonwealth). Then, just as I was pondering whether I should waste a couple of favours I owe Sweden (which I have a lot) on asking them to prepare for war, they decide to finish Denmark. Such case.
So, I help Sweden eat Denmark, which inevitably launched several other large scale wars, in which Milan pretty much died, Savoy surprisingly resurrected, all while Commonwealth was getting pounded on both sides by Muscovy and Ottomans.
Of course, Sweden eating Denmark led to Brandenburg, Brunswick, Pomerania and Norway forming a coalition against Sweden, and Brandenburg also called in their ally Austria. I have too many favours on Sweden that I'd just let that slip. Also, England wanted to finally finish off Scotland (confined to two provinces in the Highlands), which called in their ally France, and English navy is too important for my alliances to let that slip. So, I'm pretty much surrounded by enemies, out of manpower (at least my Administrative ideas give me cheap mercs), hoping Sweden can bite through Brunswick and Brandenburg to come help me and Netherlands against France – when suddenly...
The Commonwealth demands Brandenburg to sign white peace with Sweden.
Yes, the Commonwealth decided to help Sweden out.

There are couple of "spiritual successors" on the market, I even got one recently called "Dungeons II" because it was for free. It was fun for a moment but I decided it's not that much fun and I prefer the originals.

Also since I brought that up I will review dungeons II
+ addicting just like originals
+ invading surface and heroes base, other dungeons on the map
+ interesting mechanics: your dungeon is controlled in a way like in the originals, by the big floating hand; on the surface and other dungeons it's like in rts warcraft style, you have menu, unit stats and their special active abilities you can use in battle; you have only 5 types of monsters + workers, but you can train them to become one of the various elite subtypes
- shit graphic design
- forced, unfunny humour
- not really challenging: invading forces are just nothing threateaning, and when you invade with full force there doesn't seem to be any challenge either; there seem to be plenty of gold on every map, you never really find yourself in financial troubles

I'd say attacking the Commonwealth was a good idea.
I allied Livonian Order just before attacking, pushing me over diplomatic limit, so I could promise them Commonwealth land for an extra frontline. Two years into the war, with Prague sieged and down, Ottomans joined in via great power intervention. The Papal State should be the first to fall, then I'm not sure, should I focus on bringing France down as well, or should I just tire them down enough for a white peace.
Even before Ottomans joined, my side was building war exhaustion slower than France and Papal State did. Commonwealth is a different story since the Russians are destroying them from the east too, but they were the aggressor in that war so France and Papal State aren't in.

Wallachia on other hand was absorbed by Hungary pretty early but was later released when Austria rekt Hungary. +15 opinion boost, and more likely to keep alliance (I think +10 reasons).
But it's most useful because you can claim throne of countries with same dynasty and royal marriage. It gets you in a succession war on the defending side so if you have strong diplomacy (like I do) it can help you both inherit strong nations and a way to passively-aggressively go to war with strong rival countries (which will challenge your claim).
